Hello friends welcome to my blog
Agricultural practices are a collection of principles of essential practices applied to farm production processes to get a productive heavest, here are some essential agricultural practices.
- Crop rotation
- shifting cultivation
- Commercial farming
- livestock farming
- Shifting cultivation
- Mix farming
- Fisheries
- Extensive farming
- Organic farming
- Pastoral farming
- Irrigation
- horticulture
- Subsistence farming.
Crop rotation is an old-aged agricultural practice that involves cultivating different crops on the same land in sequenced seasons. It increases crop yielding and increases soil fertility. It helps reduce soil erosion and breaks pest cycles
Shifting cultivation
This is an agricultural practice in which a plot of land is cultivated temporarily and abandoned allowing it to return to there natural vegetation while the farmer leaves for another plot of land.
Shifting cultivation involves the use of fire to clear the land after allowing the land to go fallow for 2 to 3 years to again become fertile for the next cultivation season.
Food production relies on healthy soil to produce healthy and plenty of crops because healthy soil is the foundation of sustainable agriculture. We must maintain our soil to remain healthy to increase soil quality, increase growth, and enable it to hold water and nutrients, also weeds and pests would be suppressed.
Plants require the right amount of nutrients to support each stage of growth, so a healthy soil is needed to influence the yield and quantity of crops. A healthy soil is important to allow air and water into the soil which are vital for plant growth. A healthy soil supports a landscape that stores more carbon.
Commercial and Subsistence farming
Commercial farming This is a practice of large-scale production for sale. It requires intensive tools like tractors, more labour and large capital. Crops farmed in commercial farming including wheat, maize, rubber, banana, cashew, sugarcane etc for widespread distribution to wholesalers and retailers. Products from commercial farming are also sold in the world market.
Subsistence farming
This is a farming-type practice by some households mainly for consumption. Here almost all the livestock and crops are consumed by the farmer and his household, they only make sales of farm products when there is a surplus. More human labour is put into this type of farming, there is no need for intensive tools.
Greenhouses are enclosed structures of glass or plastic that are used to grow plants such as tomatoes, vegetables, flowers, fruits etc. A greenhouse stays warm inside. Sunlight shines into the greenhouse during the day and warms the plant and air inside. Greenhouse enables farmers to grow their plants all year round no matter the weather or season because plants are grown under controlled environmental conditions.
Greenhouses are constructed in different sizes and shapes according to their functionality, each structure has its benefits. Two types of them.
