Welcome to my page once again. It is good to join team agro contests in the community. Planting and care is a good topic as plants do need care just as we humans also do. Let's get the topic started with my views.
My country nigeria, is in the sub-saharan and the West Africann region, is in the tropical area. And if you watch very well, all tropical areas are responsible for two seasons, mainly
- the rainy season
- the dry season
Rainy seasons in my country are those periods of more rainfall and less drought periods. They are usually times captured between April and October. These are major periods of high rainfall. Though we still see slight rains in march and November, this doesn't categorize them as one.
Dry seasons, on the other hand, are periods of little or no rains. They are usually moments of haze and harmattan. Cold weather is characterized by dusty weather, and heat wave periods. Many dislike this period because of the so many inconveniences it comes with.
The best planting time in my country is the rainy season. This marks the beginning of planting seasons for my country. From the month of march, which welcomes the rainfall season, gradually prepares both the soil and farmers for full-scale farming and planting moments in April.
The soils during this period are moist after a long period of drought during the dry season and hence very wasily to till and as well rich in nutrients for plant growth after a period of fallow. Most crops also find their seasons of growth between this period. The maize, wheat, millet, okro, vegetables, pear, etc, all find their amazing moments during the rainy season.
The importance of planting trees in the right place and even on the right time is one that is beneficial to the adequate growth of our trees. Trees come with so much benefit to both humans and the environment around.
The ecological importance is a situation whereby it helps us remove harmful toxins from our environment and hence provide us with cleaner oxygen for take in. Just like we breahhe in oxygen and exhale carbondioxide, the plants do a reverse of these. This is important for us given the air clean they give to us.
The Asthestic importance of planting trees is one fancy situation that has continued over time. In my country, one way to know some individuals who have made people is from the beautiful trees planted by their house sides. It comes with the desired beauty and as well expresses some form of luxury to owners.
The environmental importance of planting trees is that help safe guard the environment from a direct climate effect. They are wagers of climate disasters like erosion from adverse effects of flooding. They tend to give the environment an additional layer to protect itself from the harsh climate change.
We could also serve as biodiversity preservation. A time when we needed to improve the number of tree species tovavoid complete extinction from existence. Planting them increases the wide adoption and their give back mechanism to nature.
Places we can plan trees
There are many different places we can find ourselves doing our planting session, and they include
- Neighbourhood
- Roof tops
- Desert areas
- Urban Areas
- Residential and government premises
- Other open areas for aesthetic reasons.
In preparing the soil, one thing we must find doing first is to carry out soil testing to know how fertile our planting land is. In most cases, the fertility of the soil is one that is of capacity to kick start planting activities in my region. This is because of the time of fallow before the rainy seasons.
Lands are usually allowed to fallow after harvest are made, and this is usually done before the start of rainy seasons. The debris, leftover harvest, and other decaying leafy substances all go down and add to the soil needed composition.
The major fertilizers available are the nitrogen, phosphorus, and Pottasium combination ordinarily theme NPK. This can be in the ratio of 10:10:10 or sometimes 15:15:15. In either case, our application quality, irrespective of our combination, should be dependent on our soil testing preparation done.
For other organic fertilizers, we have animal dumps like the cow and poultry leftovers, which is another great way of soil enrichment. We also have wood ash, food waste, etc, that form part of organic manure commonly found here for soil use.
Pests and diseases are plants worse enemies. They are only out to undermine their yield and performance and sometimes cause the death of plants.
Methodically, it is necessary to identify pests and diseases before the introduction of any type of medication on them. What kills these pests andrhe other diseases may not be applicable to the other types. And there is no kill all pests and diseases pesticides and fungicides.
For uncertainty of use, it is ideal to read the instructions before use as a guide. This may either state the stages of application, quantity to be applied by square meters, etc.
We also have to note that the use of chemicals is best done when the weather is.calm, especially in the morning hours. The use of chemicals when it is hazy or windy or during rainfall would amount to nothing or cause more damage.
In handling pests and diseases, it is ideal to adopt the IPM strategy where all methods are used as the case may be. The use of chemicals, biological, physical, etc. are in place as needed.
Roof top garden is kind of sensitive and requires a mostly home friendly strategy that does not harm human habitation. In carrying out this, natural methods are introduced such as the use of Neem Oil Spray with Garlic. This helps repel any build-up of pests.
I've also seen the use of wood ash introduced to help protect plants. They are sprinkled on our plants, and this help stir away pests. Though, when it rains, thenare washed down to the soil, which also serves as organic manure.

Observations and suggestions:
Nigeria has a variety of climates. Due to which rain is seen in some places from March to April and in some places from March to November. The advantage of working during monsoons is that there is not much labor and there is no need to water the roots of the plants. You have chosen beautiful places to plant trees. In our area, trees are usually planted around the playground, but less trees are planted in the neighborhoods. We see many people using chemical fertilizers while planting trees but most of the people do not use any kind of chemical fertilizers they use animal droppings. It is not possible to use modern methods of IPM in all areas so I think that some local methods can be used. And neem oil spray with garlic has gained worldwide popularity as a household insecticide.
