Hello, everyone; I am pleased to welcome you to my blog and to have your attention. A big thanks to @joslud and @solperez for coming up with this interesting contest on micro-story. Let's get started...
Out of the numerous myths and legends of my country (Nigeria), the one that catches my fancy and has remained evergreen is "Things Fall Apart", a monumental work done by Prof. Chinụa Achebe.
The character and protagonist I would be picking out from this work of art is "Okonkwo". Now, let's describe Okonkwo.
Okonkwo in the Igbo language means "power" or "male strength".
Okonkwo is native to the Umuofia clan, precisely from the village of Iguedo. Okonkwo's father is "Unoka", he is a musician and a debtor, who Okonkwo considers weak and unmanly. Okonkwo's mother in the novel was unidentified.
Okonkwo, a descendant of the great Umuofia warriors, is anticipated to uphold the family's honor and traditions.
The Micro-story
Okonkwo's bolo sliced through the air, his muscles pulled taut with rage. Ikemefuna, the juvenile boy trusted to his care, cowered. The oracle's edict echoed in his mind: "Kill him, or face the fury of the gods." But Unoka's tender spirit, his father's legacy, whispered dissent. Okonkwo's heart wrenched as he lifted the blade. The village watched, still and expectant. In that instant, he felt the heaviness of tradition overwhelm his soul. He struck, and Ikemefuna's life slipped away. The sound of the blade still echoed in his mind as he ambulated away, the quietness that trailed deafening. His strength, once his dignity, now felt like a bane.
I would title the above micro-story:
"The Weight of Tradition"
