Remittances from overseas workers have resumed their rising trend in Bangladesh, surpassing US$ 2 billion in the first 28 days of August. As per the most recent statistics on remittances by Bangladesh Bank as of August 28, Bangladeshis living abroad transferred $2.07 billion to their homeland via official channels.
Remittance inflows for the same period in August 2023 totaled $1.43 billion. In July 2024, amidst the student uprising, Bangladesh experienced the lowest remittance in the previous ten months. The nation's remittances were approximately $1.91 billion in July.
Noteworthy, due to the scenario brought up by the students' campaign against discrimination, public holidays, and other holidays, banks were closed from July 19 to July 23. Aside from this, mobile internet was unavailable for ten days and broadband was unavailable for five days in a row. As a result, international banking transactions with the nation's banks were all but discontinued.
Bangladesh Bank has implemented various measures to enhance remittances in order to mitigate the foreign exchange crisis and augment its reserves. These policies have improved foreign income and remittances entering the nation during the past few months.
