were particularly fascinated by exotic animals they could see at the hunting games in the Colosseum, especially those they had never seen before. In some instances, there were not yet Latin names for some of the ‘new’ animals. The most famous example is the giraffe. A giraffe was brought to Rome for the first time by Julius Caesar in 46 B.C. after a victorious war campaign in Egypt. It was called camelopardalis, that is, a tall camel with the features of a leopard! Still today the scientific name of this animal is Giraffa camelopardalis, the name given by the astonished Ancient Romans.
