I'm sorry and maybe I'm a little old fashioned, but WHY oh WHY are Hasbro changing a character's name that has existed since 1952, is loved by kids and adults alike, and has become a cult figure thanks to the Toy Story movies. Mr Potato Head is totally non offensive, even to potatoes, and it seems this is being done in response to the "let's be fair to all genders equality" brigade? Sorry, but I don't get it. Do you?
Life is all about diversity, and whether we are male, female, trans, gay, black, white, Chinese, African, even from Outer Mongolia, WE ARE ALL SPECIAL and UNIQUE. Instead of pandering to make everyone homogeneous, why shouldn't we celebrate our differences, our cultures, our looks and beliefs, all of which are valid and wonderful??
Now I understand if you were making a change that has in the past caused offence to a certain section of society, and the rebranding of certain items that glorified slavery or servitude is right and proper to do, but I see no offence that has ever been caused by Mr Potato Head. Are we going to change Batman to Batperson next? Are Mickey & Minnie Mouse suddenly going to be made gender neutral too??
Here's an idea Hasbro!! Why not create NEW characters that are gender neutral icons, instead of changing and rebranding much loved ones that humans of all ages have loved and played with for years and years??
I have had enough of this corporate madness to be all things to all people, and there is a slightly sinister edge to all this if Hasbro think that sales and profits of "Potato Head" will rise because both boys and girls will be buying the same item!! This would be profiteering of the very worst kind, if they are thinking like that.
Let men be men, let women be women, and if you feel that you need to change, do so, but let's not glorify neutrality!!
Differences are good, and let's celebrate them....!!!!
