A nice walk in the Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires, Argentina (6 pics)

La Recoleta cemetery is recognized as one of the most beautiful cemetery in the world.

I have to say that its all-above-ground design goes a long way towards making this claim.

Indeed, no macabre and depressing graves will be found here.

Although some sections are a bit neglected, the majority of the premises are very well maintained and designed.

The cemetery was created in 1822 around a convent and a church and is the last resting place of famous people who have marked Argentinian history like many Argentine presidents, but also people known worldwide as one of the granddaughter of Napoleon.

The most sought-after tomb is undoubtedly that of First Lady Eva Perón.

A very sober tomb without flaunting.

I must say that the story of her arrival here is more interesting than her grave.

To make a long story short, the government of the day hid her body for 20 years before it was finally buried here.

There are a little less than 6,500 graves, vaults and mausoleums scattered in a beautiful way, all well ordered.

A little stuck to each other, but it adds to the charm of the place.

Several architectural styles coexist in this cemetery where most of the mausoleums were built before 1930.

There are lots of marble and statues in abundance.

The graves of the richest families stand out from the rest.

A colossal work unmatched nowadays.
