Allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to certain substances in nature, which are called allergens. These reactions are caused by substances that are usually harmless to most people. In the case of upper respiratory allergies, they can cause rhinitis. In the lower airways, they trigger asthma.

Several environmental factors are believed to influence the development of these respiratory diseases in genetically susceptible individuals. The agents that cause this type of allergy are inhaled antigens suspended in the air that penetrate the body through the airways: domestic dust mites, fungi, animal epithelia and pollen.

Mites

Dust mites are primarily responsible (among this group) for the symptom of respiratory allergy. They are beings not visible to the naked eye and their feces represent the highest degree of allergenicity of the mite, they feed on flaking skin, fungi and other substances rich in protein. They develop in places with a lot of dust, with temperatures between 18 to 26 degrees, low light and humidity greater than 50%. They are found in mattresses, pillows, rugs, carpets, plush toys.

Fungi

Fungi are found suspended in the air and in closed environments such as attics, basements, cabinets, suitcases, and can also appear in bathrooms, kitchens, tile joints, humidifiers and in hot and poorly ventilated places.

Locations with high humidity and dust can be a great opportunity for the installation of fungi, so they can also be present in air conditioning without maintenance, mattresses and pillows.

Animals

Allergy to animals is prevalent in dogs and cats, but contrary to what they think, hair is not considered the most allergenic, saliva and urine proteins linked to hair are the most important allergens, as well as the peeling epithelium, which are dandruff. The antigens can be carried on clothes for schools, offices, automobiles, places where the animal never appeared.

Pollen

Pollens are microscopic grains intended for plant fertilization. Certain species are blown into the air at a specific time called the pollination period. Pollen grains from plants produce respiratory allergy by inhalation. Pollen disease is more common in the regions of Europe, Argentina and the United States. In Brazil this allergy can be found in the states of the southern region.

Other factors

Inhalation of nonspecific irritants (strong odors, perfumes, cleaning products, cooking gas, cigarette smoke (passive smoking stands out where the child population can inhale cigarette particles), environmental pollutants, inhalation of cold and dry air as well can trigger problems.
