The "20-second start rule" proposed by Harvard psychology tutor Sean Ekol tells us: if the start energy required to do a thing is greater than 20 seconds, then it will be difficult to start the event. If the start energy is less than 20 seconds, It's easy to do.
What does that mean? That is to say, the shorter and easier it is to start an event, the more human beings are willing to do it.
For example, after a child comes home from school and finds no one at home, will he pick up the remote control on the table and turn on the TV in one second? Or go back to the room, put down your schoolbag, and take out your homework to write?
The answer is obvious, and it must be the former. Not only does it take less time to activate energy, but it is also more attractive to children.
But under the same environment, if the child goes home and finds that the remote control is out of power, and the spare battery is not found after searching the house, and it is too troublesome to go out to buy, then he can only give up struggling and go back to the house to do his homework?
Watching TV is more troublesome than doing homework. It's better to finish your homework quickly, and maybe you can still play with your phone for a while after your parents come back.
see it? As long as we think of ways to make it more difficult to watch TV, the longer it takes to activate the energy, the lower the child's desire to watch TV, and finally give up completely.
Have you learnt that? In fact, I don’t want to worry about tutoring my children anymore. It’s actually very simple to let the children do their homework well.
has anyone actually had any positive results with this approach?

I completely agree with you. When the energy required to get a task done is so much and requires much time, you hardly venture into such a task. Watching TV requires less energy when all obstacles are removed.

Thank you for this post. I think it is also very useful for adults. Indeed, even if you know the trick, it will still work on you. Home workout is so much easier when your sport clothes and accessories are already out :-)
