This is so tasty!
Gar are a fish that many claim are "trash fish." Many claim they are "too boney" to eat. Fortunately, we have a different view on things and are therefore able to enjoy this massive and delicious fish. In case you're not familiar with Gar, here's a video of my nine year old son pulling in one that's about three feet long.
For Gar Boil, we use a spicy boil mix traditionally used with crawfish, shrimp, or crabs. We like the flavor of the spicy boil mix, but don't eat crustaceans, so we find that Gar is a suitable substitute. It's a tough-fleshed fish, so the meat doesn't flake and fall apart when cooked. Besides the gar and boil mix, we like to add vegetables and some beef sausages too. It make for a hearty and enjoyable meal, and while the photos are impressive, they cannot express the flavor. Enjoy!
