An extreme heat wave and drought has hit China for 70 consecutive days, which is "unprecedented in modern records in China or around the world."
As a result of 'massive heavy rains' in China's neighboring country Pakistan, 900 (more than) people have been killed and nearly 100,000 houses have been destroyed. Pakistan's neighboring country India has suffered 200 days of extreme heat so far this year. Last year this number was only thirty two 32.
In South Korea, Seoul experienced its heaviest hourly rainfall in 80 years, flooding the capital and prompting 50 cities and towns to be warned of landslides.
Certainly the Western countries were not spared either. The July heat wave that swept the United States set more than 350 record high temperatures across the country and killed more people than other extreme weather events such as floods and hurricanes combined.
Europe is experiencing its worst drought in five hundred years and Britain has experienced its worst drought and heat wave since 1976. Expected torrential rains only add to the feeling that they can happen at any time.
All these cannot be coincidences. When was the last time our world was hit by such extreme weather conditions at the same time? Of course, these are the effects of the climate crisis and only a sign of what is to come.
Those affected by heat, drought and floods will have an immediate impact, but larger waves like tsunamis will do far more damage.
Germany has faced the same problem this summer as rivers have dried up, affecting transportation, energy production, wildlife and agriculture. In these circumstances, high energy prices are already having a devastating impact on business activity in Europe and around the world.
Alarm bells are ringing everywhere. We cannot continue to ignore them. The climate crisis will not only be felt in heat waves, droughts and floods, but also in the form of rising food, commodity and energy prices. It will be felt through the migration of millions of people around the world to escape famine, water scarcity and starvation.
This climate crisis will be felt in a world that will be far more unstable than it is today.
We are at the point where the problem starts. Unless governments and companies are forced to rapidly reduce carbon emissions, the world as we know it will crumble before our eyes. If basic commodities such as food, water and energy become scarce, we will be shocked at the speed at which society will collapse.
Forget net zero (total elimination of carbon emissions) in 2030, let alone 2050, we can't wait that long. If we don't heed this siren now, it will be too late next time.
