If am opportune to be a vice-chancellor for just 24 hours, I would tackle pay and workloads.

Firstly I would start by publishing everyone’s salary, from the higher hierarchies to the least academic staffs. I will make sure that all staff at least are paid very well, including those on that are on part-time or external contracts. I will also make sure that my own salary will be 5times bigger than their own😂.

I will also encourage the payment of academic staffs to be paid according to the hours you work in a particular day. With this I will make all my staffs permanent workers and all of them must keep to standards and with a clear internal career path. This method works very well if my staffs gets promoted. I will rewrite the system and criteria for promotion as a clear checklist of achievements, and also set a committee that will promote any staff that is worth promoting.

In a situation where payment is fair, but workloads are nothing to write home about. The early career academic staff can feel that the only way to progress is by working 40+ hours in a week. These kind of overworking is quite exclusive and may lead to loss of good staffs with relationships or caring responsibilities.

I will also create a standard staff-to-student ratio across all faculty and departments and recruite enough staff to achieve it, thereby making sure that teaching workloads are sustainable. Making research is very crucial for all academic staffs, in some cases new lecturers are often faced with difficulties in their first few years trying to balance and developing a research trajectory, ensuring to write brand new teaching materials. For this reasons, I will reduce teaching load for new lecturers for the first three years.

If possible, the only way to reduce workloads is to employ others like, more professional service staffs and research assistants, I will try all possible best that these additional posts be made available and be paid accordingly. I will also encourage all staff who interested in any position to job shadow the staff in charge of that position for a day once a year.

Conclusion

If opportunities are given to our students and young youths to give brilliant ideas, fresh perspectives on how to better of Universities will go a long way in improving our Universities and their staffs lives.
