The Power

If you have tested power no matter how small, you will realize that power is not only sweet but sweeter when used to get achieve a desired goal. sometimes I seldomly blame politicians who use the privilege their offices afford them in getting what they want, it might be wrong in some respect but power is indeed powerful.

I came into College of Medicine Enugu Campus with a lot of enthusiasm to meet new people, get good grade, explore the city and if time permits woo girls.

The first few weeks of our resumption was filled with so much fanfare and packaging from our colleagues. There was a lot of show off and for you to measure up, you must be either rich, handsome, beautiful, intelligent or atleast from a renowned university. It was a requirement by implication.

Intelligent guys will call for tutorials and the rich guys will sponsor the tutorials with food and drinks and the girls will end up following them. While we have our academics to contend with, people like me also had these set of guys to contend with as well, but like they say, you can’t give what you don’t have.

There was this lady in my group very pretty, she goes by the name Adaeze. She is beautiful, Average, Dark skinned just as I like it but I didn’t seem to measure up to her standard.

There is nothing I didn’t do to show my over flowing affection for her. Knowing where she sits in class I decided to change my sitting position even during night class. I secure seat for her before she comes in for lecture, get her snack on days we have long lecture hour, attended her church even though I am not Catholic. All these didn’t earn me her phone number and to make matters worst we had a biometrics system of signing attendance making it impossible to copy it from anywhere.

The day she finally accepted to have a dinner date with me, it was one of those guys with cars that brought her to the canteen. I was already used to their oppression so I couldn’t complain.

After spending my two days feeding money in one evening, she opened her mouth to tell me that I was really distracting her from studies, that she doesn’t want any relationship. I used the balance of the money I had that evening to get take away rice and salad so I will be sure the money finished and I will grieve for both the money I spent and the rejection in one fell soup.

I decided to leave her alone bearing in mind the igbo adage that says “nwata talu amu ebule, ji ibi ugwo” (A child that eats the penis of a ram, is indebted to a hyena).

Again, our people say “na efi na enwero odudu, chi ya na achuru ya ijiji” (A cow without tail, its god pursues flies for it). In less than 2 weeks after that dinner, I was elected the HOR

I had access to the school management, held meetings with them alongside other elected colleagues, I attended to some students complaints on behalf of the Class Rep, became the spokespersons of the executive council and had cause to address an audience of over 300 students almost on daily basis. My offices exposed me to scheme of things and by extension made me popular.

Those guys that use to oppress me started being friends with me, they buy me food, seek my opinion on things, went to town together for shopping. I started going on dates on the invitation of the other gender. I even fell in love with someone from Bayelsa State even though I cannot swim. I also attended functions on invitation and find myself in the reserved seats for important guests.

One evening my phone rang and low and behold, the caller introduced herself as Adaeze, I mean the Adaeze. She must have gotten my line from the flyers and notices around the school. She requested we have lunch the next day after our first session. I told her that I have a meeting already scheduled for that time( meanwhile I didn’t) and she said wherever I am she will come and meet me.

I switched off my phone after the first period the next day and went to my lodge. Before the second session started I intentionally came and addressed the class and repeated announcements already made the previous day, and made it sound serious just for her to have a glimpse of me.

Since she couldn’t have the kind of audience she wanted with me, she became friends with my friends and started sending me food and gifts through them. I will give it to her, she is smart and intelligent.

Since I didn’t have money, I started using her gifts to service my relationship with the Bayelsa beauty even though I was her boyfriend in acting capacity. I didn’t allow the little power I had to get to me but I did make sure I used it to touch those that earlier oppressed me.
One evening, I was reading at Rehab Class when she came in company of my friends. I had avoided her enough I know but that was my way of showing her that “odogwu ekwesiro idi soft, odogwu di soft umuazi adoya vam vam vam”.

She kept her books close to mine and asked that we go outside and talk. I obliged her and we took a walk. For the first time I saw people in pairs with hands on hands and hands on waists at the wee hours of the night around the garden. I didn’t resist when she held my hands and soon I noticed it had passed the elbow. We have long passed where we have regular movement of people when she stopped.

She asked me why I have been avoiding her. In the process of opening my mouth even though I was not sure what was going to come out of it, she drew me close and kissed me passionately.

Remember I said she is beautiful, I had to kiss her back.
