ATAXIA: A severe medical condition
Good day steemians. It's been a while since I last posted. The medical world is somewhat very interesting and also intriguing. Today, I'll be talking about Ataxia.
When we hear of ataxia, what comes to one mind? How can ataxia be detected? What causes ataxia? Can it be treated? We'll get to know about that sooner in this post of mine.
ATAXIA: A severe medical condition
What is Ataxia?
Ataxia is medical condition which affects muscle coordination. When one lacks the ability to control the voluntary muscles such as walking, running, standing this condition is known as Ataxia. Ataxia usually comes with trembling movements. That is, the person feels shakyband unable to fully control voluntary actions.
Ataxia is usually caused by a damage or improper function of the cerebellum. The cerebellum is the portion of the brain which helps in the control and coordination of voluntary actions of the body. There are other different things which can cause ataxia and you'll get to know of them by fully reading this post.
SYMPTOMS OF ATAXIA
Symptom of ataxia are of various kinds. Once one has ataxia different symptoms can be witnessed ranging from physiological conditions to anatomical conditions. The different symptoms of ataxia which can be witnessed are:
I. Difficulty in swallowing:
Swallowing can be difficult if one can control voluntary actions, then motor actions like swallowing becomes a problem.
II. Trembling movements:
The person is seen to always be shaking. That is an uncontrollable shake. This is caused as a result of a defect in the cerebllar activity of an individual.
III. Inability to fully control voluntary actions:
Once the cerebellum has defects or once it is damaged, voluntary actions are very hard to be able to control.
IV. Inability to control motor actions like eye blinking, eating, writing:
Muscles of the eye or other muscles cannot be controlled. Therefore these actions listed above are affected severely.
V. Poor muscle coordination:
This refers to the inabilith of the muscles to be organised. When there is disorientation of muscles due to ataxia, then this leads to inability of the muscles to perform normally.
CAUSES OF ATAXIA
What causes Ataxia?
Ataxia can be caused by several factors and these can be very severe.
Ataxia is caused by the the following factors below:
• Cerebral palsy
• Stroke
• Improper function of the Cerebellum
• Tumor
• Trauma of the head
TREATMENT OF ATAXIA
Actually, there is no cure for ataxia but different measures can be put in place to ensure ataxia is controlled though it has no cure. This various processes include:
• Physical Therapy to improve muscular control.
• Modified utensils for feeding.
• Speech therapy
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, ataxia is very severe. Imagine not being able to control your actions, you get to miss out on things every normal human can do. This condition is a liability and affects the patient badly.
