I want to start by greeting everyone in CampusConnect community. The fact that you are alive and well enough to read this should be a thing of joy. I will be taking us on a few health tips which people ignore but happen to be really important. The effects of indifference on the part of people owing to the fact that it doesn't affect them immediately is a thing to be worried about. There are alot of things the older generation wish they could have done to change their health condition presently which can only be changed when they were younger.
- KEEPING YOURSELF AND YOUR ENVIRONMENT CLEAN- This is one thing alot people find very hard to cope with. As far as your environment is dirty, you can't keep a good hygiene. People especially those living in shared apartments/buildings would see something unsanitary but due to the fact that they aren't the perpetrators they would leave it there. This is very bad because it not only affects the perpetrators but it also affects everyone staying in that environment. For instance, leaving stagnant water which would serve as a den for mosquitoes to lay their eggs and later on affect all the tenants in that compound. Keeping your toilet and kitchen clean as those are one of the most vulnerable and salient places. Once these places are unkept, staying healthy would be a really huge challenge.
The rest are practically basic knowledge; brushing the teeth very well, scrubbing the salient parts of the body that need scrubbing and bathing well, avoid body odour at all costs and always try to smell nice.
a) If someone with a skin disease gives you clothes or you buy already used clothes put them in hot water before washing and wearing to remove all forms of chemicals used on the cloth or any form of disease.
b) When you get back from the market with fruits (apples, garden egg etc) and veggies (lettuce, tomatoes etc) always make sure to wash them with salt before consumption or use.
c) If you happen to have children you are taking care of, their immune systems are weak and they need all the hygiene they can get so watch what they put in their mouths, change their diapers regularly, bath them from time to time. Alot of babies have died due to an illness or the other and we can help stop this.
d) try to avoid drinking dirty water by all means, if you don't trust the water source you can always boil it before use that way alot of germs are killed and you can drastically reduce any chances of cholera and other related diseases.
- SLEEP IS A NECESSITY- Alot of us have it tough, some are juggling multiple jobs while some work all day and night but I want to let you know that a dead person can't work. When you deprive yourself of good sleep; first of all your weaken your immune system, you reduce the speed at which your body works, you increase your stress level, you overwork the brain and sooner or later you might becoming a moving corpse. A weak immune system can spell one's end as he or she has increased chances of illness and fatal diseases.
We are not machines, we need rest. Atleast 7-9 hours of sleep would be perfect and if you can't keep up with this you can try 6 hours atleast.
When you wake up in the morning, don't be soo quick to jump out of bed as it can cause one to slump. If you have noticed attimes when you wake up and suddenly jump out of bed there is this sudden dizziness you feel and I've come to learn that it could even lead to ones death.
When ever you wake up, whilst lying down you can just say a little word of thanks to your creator for making see another day in your mind then immediately after that you can stand up and do a couple of stretches to get your body moving for the day.
- BALANCED DIET/ HEALTHY FEEDING-
In the world today, alot of junk food keep being produced and alot of people ignore the healthy meals. One day I was doing a little research on important fruits and vegetables and I discovered that all fruits and vegetables have one importance or the other. We might never know maybe that banana or apple you ate alot as a kid could be what kept you alive or maybe the salad your mum forced you to eat when you were younger could have kept you away from a life threatening disease. People often leave out meat/fish when talking about health but there are alot of nutrients in the meat we consume.
Meat | vitamins and nutrients provided |
---|---|
Fish | Rich in phosphorus and calcium and a great source of iodine, iron, zinc, potassium |
Pork | Zinc, vitamins B6 and B12, iron, phosphorus |
Beef | beef liver is said to be high in vitamin A, beef also provides iron, zinc and vitamin B12 |
Chicken | low in calories and high in proteins, potassium, phosphorus and has alot of b vitamins |
Aside all these fruits and vegetables have even more nutritious value but that would be a story for another day. There is no harm in balancing our meat, vegetable and fruit intake. Superstitious beliefs of meat being bad for the health are false, meat is only bad when one consumes too much. Animal products like eggs, milk etc are some of the most nutritious. Atleast try to consume 1 egg a day as it is very helpful.
- KEEPING FIT AND VISITING THE DOCTOR- what I mean here is watching your weight, going for regular checkups and doing a little exercise. There is no harm in being lazy for time to time but we must also take care of ourselves. Atleast in the morning before going to work a little jogging, skipping or push ups won't hurt. Exercise can be hard or tasking but nevertheless it comes with its own benefits. Exercise strengthens the body, makes one more attractive and also strengthening the immune system. Some of us do alot of exercises without even knowing especially in brown collar jobs which requires one to work hard physically. Do you know that, exercise reduces the chances of diseases like type ii diabetes, high blood pressure let's not forget obesity and it improves your memory, helps us manage our weight and Improves the health of our heart.
It mustn't be hardcore, a little exercise or basic one is enough.
The issue of visiting the doctor can't be emphasized enough. If you feel weird or different visit the doctor, no harm in going for checkups. Alot of illnesses, infections and diseases without cure can be avoided or could have been avoided if only the person suffering from them had visited a doctor at the early stage. In Nigeria today, once a child falls sick the parents assume it's malaria and start treating them for malaria without going for a checkup and this is wrong. If their guess isn't correct and the child was slowly dying what would they do. Also go for regular blood pressure checkups especially for those who are stressed, the old and those who are going through alot.
I hope I am able to educate you all even if it's a little. Thanks for reading and remember Health is wealth, The earlier, the better and Prevention is better than cure. Do have a lovely week ahead and stay healthy.
