Introduction
Good day my Steemit Brosevs, it's Rasheed once again bringing you a scoop of student life. Today we will be examining the effects of peer pressure on both university students and students as a whole. I personally love this topic because I go through such pressure every single day. You could even say it's peer pressure that brought me to Steemit. Let's quickly take a look at the negative pressure students face by their peers.
As we all know peer pressure is the leading cause of soo many bad, anti-social and unacceptable behavior in the society today. Most times when people hear peer pressure they associate it with bad behavior but there are actually two classifications for peer pressure which includes positive and negative peer pressure. We should always know these classifications and endeavor to follow up the positive aspect.
Let me give an example of positive peer pressure; John, James, Jude and Jonathan are friends and they are having a test next week. Jonathan doesn't want to read but due to the fact that his friends are reading he joins them so as not to be left out. Thus Jonathan has been motivated by his friends to study and this is a good thing.
Let me give an example of Negative peer pressure; John, James, Jude and Jonathan are friends. John, James and Jude steal from their parents and spend on irrelevant things. Jonathan being part of their circle wouldn't want to feel left out so he would join them in steal from their parents. As we can see there was much pressure on Jonathan to commit such attrocious acts all because he didn't want to feel left out. Now we shall be looking at the effects of peer pressure on students.
£ffects of peer pressure on students
They place a large burden on their parents
The most common pressure we experience today is the fact that there are people around us who have more money and spend more and we want to be like them. Someone whose parents are struggling to meet up to his/her needs in school would go through alot as their son would make up silly excuses to get more money out of them so he can spend like his/her rich friends. It makes people feel less of themselves
It makes people question themselves and their lives. If everyone around you has rich parents who spend alot and yours are struggling you could start wishing you had someone else's parents or you would blame it on your parents. It can cause serious depression and segregation from others
I have witnessed this several times amongst my peers. In schools today there are several students who make alot money and have their own cars. This makes some other students feel like they are whiling away their lives or makes them feel inferior which can also make them have suicidal thoughts. Some see their peers as perfect and see themselves as not worthy of being a part of them so they seclude themselves from any form of socialization.Cultivation of some social vices
Good and well trained students who were well brought up by their parents come to the University and meet all manner of people. After several interactions with these people they tend to learn a few bad habits and acts from them. Some examples include stealing, skipping classes, smoking, sagging and they begin to ruin the efforts put by the parents in moulding them into the best they can be.
These are some of the common effects of peer pressure but let's not forget that some of them are forced into committing these acts. Let's take for example Cultism. A cultist won't nicely ask you to join them, it's either as a threat or violently so we as students and future parents should always do our best to stay out of harm's way and this we can do by avoiding trouble and not being to loud in our ways of life. As future parents, we should pave our children in a way as not to make them easily vulnerable to peer pressure and let's all be happy with our current lives and focus on the bigger picture and not on the lives of others.
Special thanks to @campusconnectng and the whole CampusConnect community.
Peer pressure is a strong thing but many people think they can escape it which is impossible. Directly or indirectly, yoir friends shape the way you act and think.

Peer pressure could be a two edged sword. It all boils down to who your friends are .
Are they good influences or bad eggs

Just choose your peers wisely. Make sure they are people you really need in your life at that very moment.
