Introductory remarks
Hello and good day CampusConnect fam, Rasheed is here again with another good and bad side of a good thing. I am a pessimist so I am always in the negative about things but one thing I always make sure to look into is the good side of something then I weigh them. As a university student, Information and Technology has done alot of good things to us but nothing comes without it's bad sides. We shall be looking at the bad and good sides in this post.
POSITIVE EFFECTS
Advanced Research for even greater knowledge
This is of benefit to both the lecturers and students at large. The lecturers can make use of the internet and the science of things to inquire more about their course of study. They could even discover new things and make an even bigger impact on the life of their students. As for the students who are given assignments, term papers, projects and even practicals they make use of information and technology do these things and do them well. There are alot of inquisitive students who would want to take a deeper dive into a course or two, this is also made easier due to the advent of Information and Technology.
Facilitates learning from anywhere and at anytime
There are situations where a student could be hospitalized due to various reasons and would have to miss out on lectures but IT comes in and saves the day as there are schools that make use of online classes/online zoom meetings to teach their students from different parts of the world as far as there is an internet connection. During the great COVID-19 outbreak where more than 75% of the world were facing total lockdown, classes still went on in various schools of which some had online examinations. While others were whiling away at home, some students were rounding up the semester all thanks to technology.
Easier methods of learning
Some teaching methods don't fit all students and I am a living example. Many teachers possess different methods of inculcating knowledge in their students but not all students can learn through their methods. But the internet provides other methods for students. Some students might not understand what was taught in class but might be too scared to raise a question but now they can easier access the internet and look for a more understandable and deeper look into the subject matter. For maths, physics, chemistry and courses alike youtube/D-tube provides methods of learning these courses from different teachers around the world both the easily understood and the complex ones. It also helps to reduce the rate of students who dropout due to frustration.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS
Distraction from studies
Youths of today who possess phones, televisions, laptops and so on in the University tend to get easily distracted and avoid lectures. Let me use myself for example, I have a television in my room and it is time for lectures. I inquire about the lecturer and once I find out that the lecturer is not a strict man, I just stay home and keep watching what I was watching while the lecture is going on. For those with phones, during lectures they are either on Social media or watching movies during lectures. It can also distract other students and even the lecturer teaching as he would have to start looking out for absent minded students and telling them to switch off their phones. Some lecturers even chat and make calls during lectures thereby whiling away the time meant for learning.
Inability of the poor to meet some requirements
Some universities give alot of assignments and projects which require the use of laptops and other technical instruments and alot of people going through tough times wouldn't really be able to meet up with such requirements.
Promotes laziness of students
While some people are in school to learn, there are those who are in school because they were forced to. A lecturer would give an assignment expecting the students to do research and learn a thing or two but the students would just go to the internet and copy and paste everything without even going through it. I know this because I am guilty.
Increased cheating by Students
Technology has tripled the rate of cheating in examinations and tests in modern times. Micro chips, holographic projections, ear buds, phones, smart watches and so on have helped students cheat easily during exams. While some learn and cheat for the rest, some others just place their hope on cheating and therefore they make no efforts in trying to read. Some lecturers see watches on Students wrists and think of it as a normal watch when it is infact a mini phone which the student is planning to use to cheat in the exam.
Aiyeeee don't feel bad fam, we are all guilty of atleast one of the negative aspects especially the distraction one well as for me I am guilty of all except cheating. I am talking based on my experiences with other students and I'm sure most of us can attest to the truth in my post and even the relatable ones. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it.
