Ecological reflection on Tropical Forest Day

Dear Steemit community!

Today, June 22, is International Tropical Forest Day. Since we go to school we are taught that trees and plant communities in general are ecosystems that absorb harmful carbon dioxide from the environment, through a complex process of photochemical transformation, decompose carbon dioxide molecules, use the carbon to form and strengthen their root system, stem, bark and leaves; simultaneously, they discard oxygen. For plants, carbon is more necessary than oxygen, which is why it is said that they are the only organisms that have the capacity to produce their own food.

This is fascinating to understand, the wisdom of nature is like this, complex, dynamic, curious and above all beautiful. Plant organisms feed themselves thanks to the combination of several environmental factors that are configured in the great cycle of photosynthesis. Human beings, through the diverse activities inherent to the model of economic, social and cultural development, generate gigantic tons of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that is necessary in the atmosphere to maintain the planet in adequate thermal conditions; however, man has surpassed the limits of tolerance and the balance has been broken, that is why the biosphere is warmer and the environmental repercussions are being manifested in diverse events.

Before Homo sapiens appeared on Earth, this greenhouse gas was produced and eliminated in a natural way; sometimes with enormous consequences such as global frosts, the appearance and disappearance of oceans, the unification or segmentation of continents and the extinction of species. So the geological, biological and atmospheric history of the planet is beautiful to know and share. Returning to our era, it is undeniable that the resilience of nature is at its most critical point; the exploitative and consumerist model being experienced is distorting climate patterns and these are having a negative impact on food production, quantity and quality of drinking water, soils for agricultural purposes, biodiversity and society in general. What is happening to humanity? Why is man determined to destroy his home?

On this important date I took the liberty of using the Whalepower Community as a communication platform to share these reflections as a loving expression for this beautiful population of Tropical Trees that provide us with an important cleaning service by removing more than 35% of the carbon dioxide that is released by the dynamics of social life.
