Nigeria as a country as as old as 54 years man. She gained her independence in 1st October 1960 from the British Colonial Masters. On the said day of her independence, the Queen of England was the Ceremonial Head of State while Chief Nandi Azikiwe was the Head of Government.
This was of course the birth of democratic governance in Nigeria. However, in resent times, the democratic governance was cut short by Military coups which brought about tension and restiveness in the county. At such time, the constitution of the country is often suspended and human right are freely violated because they no longer mattered or exist in the the constitution.
Nonetheless, the Military era has given birth to a sustainable democratic society where democratic leaders are elected to go and represent the people in the government. Thus, this became the order of the day since 29th May 1999 till date. More so, since it's inception in 1999, Nigeria has experience a smooth transmission of one elected executive to another starting from Late Mohammed Musa Ya'Adua to President Mohammedu Buhari.
Point to note is that the process of electing these executives into power has not always been a smooth one but one filled with violence, threat, blood shade and kidnapping among other vices.
The menace of election in Nigeria is as old as politic in the country itself. The major problem that we are facing in the country is that over the years, people saw and are still seeing politics as a game for the riff-raff and dropouts. As such, since politics was left for them, the idiosyncrasies of the participants manifest in maiming, fraud, forgery, thuggery assassination and rigging. As the saying goes, no one can give to others what he does not have.
In developed countries of the world, it is totally different. Politics is mainly for the elites and decent citizen and not the ones we see in Nigeria.
