Salutations my esteemed steemians, I'm thrilled to engage in this contest debate, (week 30) organised by @sahmie with the theme: "Physical books or e-books: Which format is better for reading and retaining information"? I'm here to drop my entry, supporting the fact that physical books are better than e-books in terms of reading and retaining information. Let the debate commence....

The one you prefer and why?

I prefer reading physical books to e-books. The reasons why i make that choice is because of my real life experiences right from childhood. When i was in jss3, I had a good friend of mine named Innocent. He was a serious students just the way i was, but during examination period, his mother got sick and he couldn't complete his note nor concentrate in his academics.

My friend by name, Innocent

The best part of the short story is that he passed the examination, how? Because i lent him my physical book 2 weeks before the examination, which helps him achieve success at last. Come to think of it, what if i depended on e-books, how would my friend passed his examination when he had no digital devices? Physical books is indeed the best because it can be easily lent.

Which format helps you focus better and remember what you read?

I'll always choose physical books because those writings can't get off my memory easily, compared to when I'm reading e-books. I'm living in our family compound currently, and this format of reading helps focus a lot. How? When I'm outside with my physical book on my hands, my small cousins will quickly know that I'm reading and they won't try to cause any trouble to avoid distraction.

Reading through e-book

But when I'm with my phone reading via e-book, they'll be thinking I'm playing game or watching movie, and they'll always want to come around to have a look, in this way i can easily forget what i raed. So physical books is the best format of reading, believe me.

The advantages and disadvantages of both types

Physical books
AdvantagesDisadvantages
It can be lent out to friends and familyIt's costly compared to downloaded e-books which can consume just 2 to 5 megabytes.
Those writings can't easily get off our memoriesWe may easily forget what we read because of unusual notifications

Which format helps you avoid distractions while reading and how?

My teammate @happyluv had a difficult time reading her introduction post because of notifications

Physical book is the best when trying avoid distractions when reading. This picture portrays when my teammate was reading her introduction post to avoid mistakes. She was hissing and reading at the same time😂, why? Because of unnecessary notifications that popped up on her phone screen.

The same thing that happened to my teammate do happen to me everyday. I'm always distracted when I'm using my phone to read because of notifications from different WhatsApp groups and all these telegram channels that promises us good fortune. Do not disturb feature is the best to stop those notificatios no doubt, but at the same time, you won't get notified when you have incoming call, so the best format to avoid distractions while reading is physical books.

Which is better for the environment?

We're living in a modern world where people easily carry their smartphones and laptops around, so e-books is the best format for reading and retaining information currently. In this modern environment, we can easily share e-books via Xender, WhatsApp or as PDF document. Even my 2 siblings do use my dad's tablet to do some research and read about their school project instead of using physical books. So e-books is better and the most used.

CONCLUSION

I'm sure with the following points of mine, I'm able to convince but not confuse you that physical books is the best format for reading and retaining information.

I'd be delighted if @wisdom123 @josepha and @bessie2023 could join me in this debate.

Of course, the major distractions now for student are their devices, so trying to read from your phone will be a big deceive for some people, cause you will easily get distracted

You're right. Thank you for your contribution ☺️
