The Debate (no.44); FUEL VS THE ENVIRONMENT

in hive-126193 •  yesterday

When we are to compare or compare different fuels used in terms of their environmental impact, we need to consider both their advantages and disadvantages which in this post I have shared with you as part of my debate point.

Fossil Fuels

Advantages:

  • It is widely available and also cheap
  • It is high energy density, which means a lot of energy is produced per day.
  • Infrastructure for transportation, extraction, and consumption is well established.

Disadvantages:

  • It releases harmful air pollution such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and others.
  • Fossil fuels are a major source of carbon dioxide that contributes to climate change.
  • Fossil fuels are finite and will eventually run out.

Biofuels

Advantages:

  • Renewable. They are made from plant or animal material which can be replenished fast.
  • Biofuels have a lower carbon footprint which means they can reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels.
  • Spills of biofuels are less harmful to our environment than spills of fossil fuels.

Disadvantages:

  • It sometimes requires significant energy to produce, reducing its overall environmental benefits.
  • Based on how they are produced, asbestos can contribute to significant air pollution.

Natural Gas

Advantages:

  • Natural gas produces fewer harmful pollutants than coal and oil, including less CO2
  • Natural gas is widely available and has become a popular transitional fuel for moving away from the use of coal.

Disadvantages:

  • Natural gas extraction and transport can lead to methane leaks, a potent greenhouse gas that exacerbates global warming.
  • Natural gas is finite like every other fossil fuel.

Electricity (Powered by Renewables)

Advantages:

  • There are no direct emissions and also electric heating system produces no emissions at the point of use
  • When generated from renewable sources like hydropower, wind, and solar, electricity has minimal environmental impact.

Disadvantages:

  • Battery used to store electricity, most especially in EVs, have environmental issues, particularly regarding the mining of materials like cobalt and lithium.
  • The environmental benefits of electricity depend on the energy that is mixed with the grid. If the electricity comes from fossil fuels, its green advantage is less.

Based on the advantages and disadvantages we have given above, we can see that fuels like hydrogen, renewable electricity, and biofuels are generally better for our environment when compared to fossil fuels, as they can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
