Hi Friends,

The e-book versus dead tree book debate is like the choice between musty-smelling ink and a creamy-syncable screen. Both mediums have their passionate advocates and unique benefits, and as such, the decision to embrace one over the other comes down to personal taste and utility. As a voracious reader, I’ve spent ample time in both domains and the following is my take on the benefits and drawbacks of each in terms of contextualized distraction, memorability, ecology, and the reading experience.

Disclosure: I Prefer Dead Tree Books

I prefer Dead Tree books. The feel of paper, the aroma of new print, and the appearance of a full bookcase are sensory experiences that the cold glow of a pixelated screen simply cannot compete with. Every book is a potential treasure, an artefact of the mind and the written word. When reading, I like holding the book in my hands, appreciating its heft and texture. This tangible connection to the material seems to deepen my appreciation for the knowledge and fiction contained within.

Memorability and Distraction

In terms of memorability and distraction, dead tree books win again. Reading the paper is easier on the eyes than reading pixels, which emit fatigue and sleep disorder-inducing blue light. Several studies suggest that reading in print facilitates greater comprehension and recall than its electronic screen counterparts. I also find it easier to avoid distractions and interruptions when reading a book as opposed to a Kindle or Nook. There are no alerts, no updates, and no ads or recommendations getting in the way of the primary task.

With books, spatial memory cues aid in recall by locating text about other page content. Marginalia, highlights, and other bookmarks also increase the memorability of the consumed material. The permanence of these additions makes review and reference easy and quick.

Dead Tree Book Pros

  • Multi-Sensory Experience: Reading engages more senses than electronic media.

  • Increased Comprehension: Empirical evidence shows greater recall and comprehension.

  • No Eye Strain: Reading doesn’t cause the fatigue associated with digital displays.

  • Collectible: Books can be acquired, displayed, and shared to create a personal library.

Dead Tree Book Cons

  • Weight: Books are often bulky and weigh down luggage when travelling.

  • Space: They take up room in homes and accumulate dust.

  • Cost: They are frequently more expensive to purchase and maintain than their digital counterparts.

E-Book Pros

  • Portability: E-books fit thousands of publications onto a single, lightweight machine.

  • Access: Instant delivery without having to leave the house.

  • Adjustability: Fonts can be sized appropriately and other stylistic qualifiers can be made to aid in perception.

  • Bookmarks: The text is easily searchable by word or phrase.

  • The War on Distraction: Avoiding the Agenda Switch

Dead tree books excel at eliminating distraction. When you’re reading a book, alerts, pop-ups, and advertisements aren’t competing for your attention. Deep reading and sustained attention are easier in this uninterrupted environment. E-books, particularly when consumed on multi-purpose devices such as tablets and smartphones, are rife with potential interruptions. Single-purpose e-readers such as the Kindle Paperwhite mitigate this concern by delivering a distraction-free reading platform that doesn’t execute the full range of capabilities of a digital tablet or phone.

Ecology: The Green Argument

The ecological argument against dead tree books and e-books is multifaceted. Trees are killed, ink is wasted, and carbon is expended in the printing and distribution of books. However, books can be recycled, shared, and reused, mitigating or eliminating their negative environmental impact.

E-books save trees and reduce the need for physical carriage but their environmental impact is not trivial. Rare earth metals and toxic chemicals are used in the mining and manufacturing processes and the 35% greenhouse gas footprint from production and shipping certainly doesn’t help the planetary conscience. When the device is retired, it joins the growing e-waste mountain that is quickly overwhelming some of the largest landfills in the world.

So which is the greener option? Well, if you read a book a week, the carbon footprint of the trees, ink, and transportation is likely smaller than the electronic counterpart. If you’re a voracious reader getting through 52 books a year, the e-book is probably the more sustainable choice moving forward. That said, if you prefer books, buy used, borrow them from the library, and recycle them.

Summary: The Best of Both Worlds

In the end, the decision to use dead tree books or e-books comes down to preference, context, and need. Books provide a multi-sensory, distraction-free experience that increases comprehension and is potentially better for retention. They are artefacts to be collected, displayed, and treasured for their literal and figurative worth. E-books offer portability, and convenience, and are easier to maintain in an always-on, hyper-connected world.

The happy medium is likely the best course of action. Use books for long, uninterrupted reads at home and carry an e-book for trips and when convenience is necessary. With this balanced strategy, the reading joy and resultant knowledge gained from both mediums will not be lost and the passionate debate can easily be tabled in a celebration of the wonderful literacy and learning that both old media and new media bring to our lives.

¡Saludos amigo!🤗
