Social media has come to stay for good and bad. We choose which would work for us.
Hello my fellow steemians. Hope we are all doing great today. I’m excited to participate in this week’s contest organised by @sahmie.
To a greater extent, I would say I feel closer to my family and friends because of social media. Social media has come to make meaning to our relationships with friends and loved ones.
The same social media we use to relate with family and friends can also be the same means to keep us apart and distant in our relationships with people.
On the positive side, I have become so close with my relatives who are not staying with me, and that has helped us bond in a very demure way.
The use of social media to reach and interact with these people makes it less difficult, and easy to reach them at any time.
So I would say social media has helped me stay close to my family and friends.
I use my phone whenever I’m not busy with something physically. I fell talking with people on the phone is way cheaper than meeting with them in person, especially if the distance is far.
I also feel that for communication to be effective and fun, we must meet physically. But I’ve also come to realise that I like my space, and we can all talk and relate so well from the comfort of my home.
Technology does both. But it helps us in making new friends more quickly.
The world has become a global village where we get to meet with all kinds of people, both the ones we know, and strangers. And this is also about us having e-family and friends. It really helps us in making new friends more.
There are a couple of time I have felt lonely even when I am using a social media platform. The media (social) is congested with people, and at the same time lonely. Sometimes, people feel depressed because they have no one to talk with when they can see that many are actively online.
The feeling of not being communicated with can make one feel they’ve been ignored or having nothing valuable to communicate. This is why someone would easily feel left out. Thus, depression or loneliness can set in.
Technology has changed almost everything about our communication with people.
Time: There’s no such thing as quality time without quantity time. Technology has made it a bit difficult to spend quality with our family and friends.
Language: Social media have made many come up with so many, sometimes unnecessary slangs used in conversing with people.
The language is much more informal and can become a problem if we are relating with elderly people.
Gestures: It has become a bit difficult to see how people are responding nonverbally to our messages.
Except in the case of a video call, which is still not a full guarantee, we cannot see the facial expressions of the people we are interacting with, or their body movements.
Bond: Bonding with people is becoming less and less important when interacting with them. Real connection happens when we see and spend more time with people, from there, we begin to bond.
These days, a good number of people do not care about connecting with people. They just want to breeze in and out.
Technology, trough the aid of social media has really reshaped our communication pattern either consciously or subconsciously. It’s in our place to choose to use it wisely while communication and relating with our family and friends.
Would like to invite @okere-blessing, @josepha and @lhorgic to participate in this contest.
