What's Plantar Fasciitis? Write in your own words after getting knowledge from the lesson post.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common conditions causing heel pain in 90% of humans. These happens when there is much stress or overuse of our feet. Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of our two foot and connects our heel bone to the toes which is known as plantar fascia.

We all know that the plantar fascia is fibrous and strong attachment ( ligament ) that run from the heel to the ball of toes, which stretches like a rubber band. So when it is overuse, it leads to damage making it swell thereby the inflammation make our foot painful while walking.

This condition is mostly common in women and athletes because women do prolonged standing while doing their home chores and playing on the ground for a longer period.

Causes of plantar fasciitis

  • The frist cause of plantar fasciitis is when an individual had prolonged standing, walking or running which causes tear or wear on the plantar fascia. This means such individual has overuse or undergone repetitive strain or pressure on the foot.

  • Another cause is abnormalities in the foot supination, fat feet, pronation which add additional stress on the plantar fascia. It is poor foot mechanics.

  • Obesity is another cause of plantar fasciitis, when there is an excess weight in plantar fascia which poses additional stress to it.

  • Severe or sudden trauma to the heel or foot can also cause plantar fasciitis.

  • This problem can be caused by aging, it is common in person from 40 and above.

  • Another cause of this disease is footwear. Wearing shoes with very poor arch cushioning or support can lead to it. That is wearing shoes that don’t support our feet very well.

Symptoms of plantar fasciitis

The most symptoms of this disease is foot and heel pains. The pain can change depending on what an person is doing or the time of day.

If an individual complain of severe pain be it stabbing, sharp or burning pain in the bottom or heel to the foot, it means l should have plantar fasciitis at the back of my mine.

Pain or discomfort in the heel of the foot due to standing for a long time.

Another symptoms is difficulty walking or prolonged standing due to inflamed bottom of the foot.

The person will experience swelling or redness around the heel or pain when pressing the heel. There is also foot numb email and sensitivity.

Types of plantar fasciitis.

There are several types of plantar fasciitis but there are 2 types based on time duration.

Acute Plantar Fasciitis: This types usually occurs when there is a sudden onset of pain and inflammation may after a specific incident like a direct blow to the heel or increase on some certain activities.

Chronic Plantar Fasciitis: Chronic plantar fasciitis is a when an individual has a long term degeneration and inflammation of the plantar fascia. The pain is always persistent and can worsen over time and can accompanied by bone spurs, heel spurs or calcaneal spurs.

There are other types like plantar Fascial tear, plantar fasciitis with heel spurs, Bilateral plantar fasciitis, Plantar Fasciitis with Achilles tendinitis, Plantar with Ankle instability, Degenerative Plantar Fasciitis, Inflammatory Plantar Fasciitis, insertional plantar Fasciitis, plantar fasciitis with gastrocnemius tightness and lot more.

How would you diagnose a plantar fasciitis? Any clinical investigation or assessment tests?

Medical history and physical examination.

The doctor will carry out a good medical history asking about the onset of the disease, the present symptoms, the duration and all the exacerbating factors that may cause the pain.

It is proper for the doctor to carry out pain assessment he or she will evaluate the location, severity and radiation of the condition. It is advisable to ask the patient for his or her exercise routine and daily activities to determine the extence of his activities level.

In physical examination, the doctor will carry visual inspection which is looking swelling, ankle inflammation or any deformity. He will palpate the heel to assess tenderness and pains.Check for Range of motion and muscle strength.

Diagnostic Tests.

X-ray: Conducting help rule out other medical conditions like osteoarthritis, bone spurs, overgrowth of bone or fractures.

Ultrasound scan or Bone Scan: is used to evaluate thickness, tear and inflammation of the plantar fascia.

MRI: This test help to confirm there is any plantar Fasciitis, the extence of inflammation and rules other conditions.

Special Test

This test is used to access the flexibility of the ankle joint to know if pain which is symptom of Plantar Fasciitis will be noticed. To do this, the patient is asked to move his foot upward towards the shin and if pain is felt in the heel then the result is positive.

Great Toe Extension Test- Another name for test called and it is the highly specific test for plantar fasciitis. This test is for identify localized pain and assess the limited mobility of great toe.

Palpate the heel area to assess pain and inflammation and other special test include Foot heel test, Maudsley test and Heel raised test.

Try to practice at least 3 exercises that you have learned from the lesson. Share images, gifs or videos while practising.

Now is exercise time, Before I start the exercise,I use a wax and carry out soft tissue mobilization which helps in pain reduction. I want to start Toe curl exercise, seconded by heel Raise and Frozen water exercise.

  • Toe Curl Exercise

I use a chair and sit comfortably with my bare foot on the floor. I curl my toes for ten seconds, I breath and count 1to 10 ten. After that, I release my toes and also count for ten seconds. I slowly returned my foot to the flat position. It is advisable to carry out this exercise in three set of repetitions, twice a day and five a week.

  • Heel Raise Exercise.

For standing heel raises, I hold the back of my chair balance and push up to my five toes and raised my heel up. I held the position up to five to ten seconds. I repeated it for ten to twenty times. I maintain the position not moving forward or backward.

  • Frozen water bottle exercise.

In this exercise, the Frist l did was to placing the my frozen water bottle on the ground. I stand to my feet and place one leg on the frozen water rolling my feet back and forward. I gradually did that for about five minutes. It is advisable to stop if the foot feels cold.

Share your review after performing these exercises either on yourself, healthy individual or patient..

I performed this exercise on my body, if you can see the video closely, I really enjoyed the exercises because, it helps in reducing foot pain, inflammation strengthen the calf muscles, improve lung explanation and reduce stress and promote good sleep. I like different types of exercise because it helps the body to stay fit and have good health.

Generally, all these exercises are very easy to perform and one can perform them anywhere. They really help with managing the symptoms of plantar fasciitis and thus are effective in the betterment of our feet, I will definitely be recommending the same to anyone who is complaining of heel to toe pain.

I would like to invite @ninapenda,@alexanderpeace @eliany and @blessedlife participate and share the explanation of plantar fasciitis with us.

Observations

Task 1 (3/3)
You have shared a great knowledge about plantar fasciitis, it's symptoms, causes, and types. Plantar Fasciitis can be caused by many reasons and that's good you point out then. I appreciate your effort.

Task 2 (3/3)
In the second question, you tell us about how you have to assess a patient by doing physical examination and history taking, performing investigations and specialized tests. Excellent.

Task 3 (3.7/4)
You try the toe curls, ball rolling and heel raise. You did the toe curls and ball rolling correctly. But in heel raise try to perform with barefoot as the main thing you have to put all the pressure or weight of your body on toes. Always remember to cold therapy & rest is the best therapy in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. I appreciate your efforts.

Overall you made a great attempt to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from plantar fasciitis or any type of heel pain. Thank you.
