How are you stemian friends...

I plan to enter a contest about "asthma" by @ashkhan . I am interested in this theme because asthma is a disease that I have always experienced for many years. Therefore, I hope that my post this time can add insight into asthma and can be additional knowledge for those of you who also experience similar diseases.

• What's Asthma? Write in your own words after getting knowledge from the lesson post.

Asthma is a disease in which there is an infection of the respiratory tract that attacks the lungs, making it difficult for you to breathe. In those affected by asthma, the respiratory tract becomes more sensitive than those who are not affected by asthma. If this disease suddenly attacks it will greatly interfere with daily activities. And under certain conditions asthma can become more serious and can be life-threatening.

As an asthma sufferer for more than 20 years I know some of the symptoms of asthma as well as some ways to prevent this disease from recurring. Because there are some of them who say asthma will heal itself when they grow up, but it seems that this has not happened to me who is now 24 years old. Until now, my asthma always recurs if I don't spray my inhaler in the morning, so I will share a little of my experience about the symptoms and how to overcome it.

I will first explain some of the symptoms of asthma, namely coughing, experiencing shortness of breath, runny nose, and wheezing. In addition, symptoms can also occur differently, for example in my experience asthma is always worse if the night air becomes colder, besides that my asthma often occurs in the middle of the night and morning. Sometimes if the condition worsens I can't even sleep in a supine position, but must sleep in a half-sitting position by arranging pillows up high.

Next are some ways to prevent asthma flare-ups.

  1. Avoid going out during cold times, such as at night or when the weather is rainy. Because cold weather can also be a trigger for asthma that begins with a cold or cold.

  2. Wear a mask when doing dusty work, such as sweeping and cleaning. Because, dust can also trigger asthma.

  3. Maintain a clean environment at home, especially the bedroom.

  4. Undergoing routine treatment according to doctor's recommendations related to asthma.

  5. Avoid exposure to indoor and outdoor pollution by wearing a mask.

There are 3 types of asthma

  1. Asthma due to allergies, which is asthma caused by allergies to something such as dust, feathers, pollen and food.

  2. Exercise asthma, which is asthma caused when we exercise excessively

  3. Nocturnal asthma, which is asthma that often recurs at night.

• How would you diagnose a asthma? Any clinical investigation or assessment tests?

Here are some ways to diagnose asthma that can be done, namely asking the patient regarding the history of the disease. Furthermore, there are also allergy tests to find out if there are certain allergies that can trigger asthma relapses. Then proceed with conducting a lung function test using a spirometry test with the aim of seeing the impact of asthma disease on daily lifestyle.

Other tests such as chest x-rays can also be done to determine the cause of the symptoms experienced and there are still several other tests such as LFT (lung function test), ABG (arterial blood gas) test and sputum analysis.

• Try to practice at least 3 exercises that you have learned from the lesson. Share images, gifs or videos while practising.

Breathing exercises

Conical lip breathing exercise
Sit on the floor in a relaxed manner and slowly inhale and purse your lips to exhale.

• Share your review after performing these exercises either on yourself, healthy individual or patient.

For asthma sufferers like me, I often do breathing exercises when my asthma flares up. This is very helpful in regulating breathing. And this time I also felt relieved after doing some exercises like the example above.

The chest stretching exercise was the first time I did it because previously I only knew breathing exercises that could reduce the feeling of tightness when the disease recurred. But the chest stretching exercise also made me much more relieved. In the future, I will often practice exercises like this because it is very useful for asthma sufferers.

Thanks for those who have read this post, I also invite @miftahilrizky @patjewell @ravikadevy to join this contest.

@fadia

Observations

Task 1 (3/3)
You have shared a good knowledge about asthma, its symptoms, causes, triggers, and types. That's shocking. You're an asthma patient, but asthma is a curable condition that can be cured either with medications or physical therapy. I appreciate your effort.

Task 2 (2.8/3)
In the second question, you tell us about how you have to assess a patient by doing physical examination and history taking, performing investigations and specialized tests. Lung function tests and spirometers are different things. You don't need to add them in one category. LFT is a imaging tests need blood sample to perform but Spirometer is done by machine and patient can perform it easily. Great.

Task 3 (3.9/4)
You try the pursed lip, diaphragmatic breathing and chest muscle (pectoralis major) stretch. You did the pursed-lip breathing and chest stretch correctly. But in diaphragmatic breathing, you don't need to keep your hand on your shoulder it should be on your chest and abdomen. Always remember to take steam or nebulization before performing exercises to relax your muscles & dislodge sputum that can excrete out easily. I appreciate your efforts.

Overall you made a great attempt to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from asthma, as winter is the trigger for most people suffering from asthma. Thank you.
