Greetings friends,

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation and stiffness of the plantar fascia(the lower foot).

If you press your foot in the middle with your finger you will discover that there is a thickness that covers not allowing you to feel your middle foot bone with ease, the tissue alongside tendons and the muscles connects the lower part of the metatarsals(toe region) to the calcaneus bone (heel region), when is plantar fascia becomes inflamed our foot becomes heavy for us to place on the ground and mobility won't be possible.

CAUSES

Plantar fasciitis_20241128_191253_0003.jpg

  • Too much pressure on the plantar fascia can cause this; I felt this some time ago when I trekked very long distances without relaxing.
  • The foot/knee is where the weight of the body rests, so in obese patients or those with much weight, the weight strains the foot/knee and may cause plantar fasciitis
  • Diseases like diabetes mellitus can contribute because it leads to poor circulation and peripheral neuropathy which comes with tingling and pain thereby causing an inflammation of the plantar fascia
SYMPTOMS

One could be said to have plantar fasciitis if there is a feeling of heel pain, a tingling in the middle of the foot, stiffness on the foot( tissue below the food seems to become stronger) and when difficulty in walking is felt.

TYPES OF PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Plantar fasciitis_20241128_191252_0002.jpg

Plantar fasciitis could be categorized based on the severity and underlying cause of the inflammation of the plantar fascia

ACUTE PLANTAR FASCIITIS: In this type, the pain doesn't exist for long; it's always less than a month.

CHRONIC PLANTAR FASCIITIS: Pain persists for over 1 month

PLANTAR FASCIITIS AND ACHILLES TENDONITIS: share the same causes: tight calf muscles can pull the muscles, leading to tendonitis; they are also common for people aged 40 and above.

DIAGNOSIS

When the plantar fascia becomes stiff and cannot move it becomes very hard for the heel to move, so an ankle dorsiflexion test is done to check how far the ankle can move while the great toe can be moved with your hands to see how limited its mobility is, palpating the heel can also help determine the area of inflammation where pain is felt.

PHYSICAL THERAPY INTERVENTION

Before physical therapy is administered, the cause of the plantar fasciitis must be determined to ascertain how long or intense the exercise should be. I performed some exercises and fed your eyes on them.

MY REVIEW

Plantar fasciitis_20241128_191253_0004.jpg

Starting with the frozen can roll, I remember those days when I collided my head on the wall when running up and down at home and my tissue would swell up due to inflammation, Mum would always look for ice to press on the inflamed area to see it reduces.

I came to also discover from research that ice constricts blood vessels making the level of fluid leakage to their affected area reduced so my application of ice made my foot cool, I felt a little relief and when I lift my foot off the ice can it seems the feeling is gradually returning to normal, so it is advisable to roll the ice regularly, the effect of this exercise is felt less for the healthy patient and affected patients it is felt more, so since I'm healthy, I can relate a little of the feeling while performing.

The Heel raise and Calf stretch are very effective in plantar fascia because when I did it, I felt an extension and pressure on this part. The calf stretch also made an extension on the gastrocnemus muscles, one of the muscles below the knee.

I would love to see entries from @bossj23, @alli001, @whizzbro4eva and @kidi40 in this contest

Thank you for understanding the lesson and sharing your assignment; I hope that you will enjoy this week's lesson and try to implement it in your life if you see any such case.

Observations

Task 1 (3/3)
You have shared a great knowledge about plantar fasciitis, it's symptoms, causes, and types. I appreciate your effort.

Task 2 (1.5/3)
In the second question, you tell us about how you have to assess a patient by performing a special test. But you didn't add details about physical examination, investigation tests like X ray, MRI, Ultrasound. Good.

Task 3 (3.9/4)
You try the soft tissue mobilization, toe curls, calf stretch, ball rolling and heel raise. You did the calf stretch and ball rolling correctly. But in toe curls, you have to curls all of your toes in a better way for effective results. Always remember to cold therapy & rest is the best therapy in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. I appreciate your efforts.

Overall you made a great attempt to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from plantar fasciitis or any type of heel pain. Thank you.
