In school where we are taught Biology, We are time that Human beings belong to a phylum called Vertebrata. Therefore we are called vertebrate due to the presence of our spinal cord. This is what enabled us to stand upright and able to perform certain tasks in the body system. But if I told you that absence of back bone can make you devoid of walking and standing upright. There is something about the vertebrate bones I'll love to look into.

My Understanding about Disc Herniation

In the backbone (vertebrate), We have numerous single bones joined together in a straight line. With that, we should know that there are items of binding that connect them together. This might commonly be known as discs. So disc herniation is a situation whereby these discs are shifted from its original position to a new place. This shift can cause issues to the bones which connect with each other. The visible symptom is back pain which indicates the shifting.

How would I diagnose a disc herniation?

To diagnose disc herniation in a person, different methods can be used

  • Physical examinations: This involving raising the leg to discover the issue. This leg raise test is helpful in its diagnosis
  • Imaging Studies: X-ray, CT scan and other forms of imaging studies can be used to diagnose this issue in a human being.
3 Exercises learnt from the lesson

Due to the instructor guidelines, here are some of the exercises I attempted.

Hip bridging exercise

This exercise is done as the person involved has to lie flat with his or her belly facing upward. From there, I kept my knee to my feet at 90° and raised my upper body. While raising, I kept my shoulder at the floor level while doing this.

William flexion (knee to chest stretch)

In this exercise, I laid flat on the floor. With that, I raised my left leg to the chest while keeping the other one straight. This process took place for a few seconds as I dropped my leg later.

Piriformis Stretch

This exercise requires the participant to lay flat on the floor. On my left leg, I kept it 90° and the right one crossed on the left one. It might seem easy to onlookers but a trial will convince you.

My review after the Exercises

My experience after those exercises proves the effectiveness of those therapies. What I felt was a little pain while attempting them. But when I stood up from the floor, I felt relieved and like a bag which was on my upper back was lifted. For me, I strongly recommend these exercises to people suffering from disc herniation.

I invite @bossj23, @goodybest and @sduttaskitchen to this contest.

Thank you for understanding the lesson and sharing your assignment; I hope that you will enjoy this week's lesson and try to implement it in your life if you see any such case.

Observations

Task 1 (1.5/3)
You have shared a good knowledge about disc herniation, its symptoms, but didn't add its types and causes. A bit more depth require to complete the answer. I appreciate your effort.

Task 2 (2/3)
In the second question, you tell us about how you have to assess a patient by doing physical examination and history taking, didn't add special tests and investigations. It would be better if you add name and explanation of one special test of each region to assess the disc herniation. Great.

Task 3 (3.5/4)
You try the hip bridging, William Flexion and piriformis stretch exercises . You did the hip bridging, William Flexion correctly. But in piriformis stretch you have to keep your heel up from the ground like William flexion and the apply a resistance force on other knee. Always remember to apply heat pack before performing exercises to relax the muscles and reduce stiffness. I appreciate your efforts.

Overall you made a great attempt to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from disc herniation or any type of back pain. Thank you.
