Difficult to Get Married! Why?"

What causes men or women to be reluctant to marry?

There are a lot of reasons why marriage is on a decline in recent years, I will be discussing this issue from my own perspective and based on my observation with a lot of influence from my background and immediate environment.
You are well come to my blog and encouraged to participate in this contest.
A real shift in social norms have affected people's willingness to get married. In the pass, when it was normal to shame people who chose cohabitation, we had more marriages. Marriage itself was an honorable thing to do, allowing the couple to freely enjoy the benefits that comes with it, while bearing it responsibilities. Today, a person can get all that was previously reserved for marriage without actually getting married which makes it easy to avoid the responsibilities and commitment that comes with marriage. This has prompted many to avoid marriage, as they don't feel like it's necessary anymore.
Others are not comfortable with the idea of being locked in with one person who demands fidelity for life. Marriage takes away that perceived freedom to switch sexual partners at will. For such persons, marriage is a no, no.
Getting rubbed by a bad divorce is another reason why some people consider the idea of getting married with a pinch of salt. There is this goal digging syndrome where people get married with a divorce in mind hoping to get rich from a divorce.

What is the importance of marriage for couples?

I can see two sides to the benefits of getting married, on the tangible side, there are legal and financial benefits like tax breaks, joint property ownership, and inheritance rights.

Marriage creates room for healthcare insurance that covers the whole family. About issue of health, the fidelity and faithfulness expected in marriga keeps us free from STDs and other health issues associated with multiple sexual partners.
On the other hand, we have intangible benefits that comes with marriage. Originally, marriage made the couple feel emotionally secure, not being in fear that any disagreement could lead to the other party just zooming off ending everything.
In marriage, you can enjoy the certainty of knowing that you will have this person around in good or bad times, a companionship that is more sure. You can get that support and a sense of commitment and belonging.
people also get married for love! And socially, my culture accord more respect those who are married.

What are the risks for men and women if they don't get married?

In my community, once a man is deceased, without the legal protection of marriage, the woman will be kicked out of the man's house and will loose everything which may include the children.
Cohabiting women loose respect among their married peers, which kills their self-esteem and moral due to the social stigma. They have very limited or no rights at all and legally has very limited protection.
When cohabiting couples have a breakup, there is no property distribution rights and child custody rights. They can't run joint health insurance and no tax cut benefits.

Conclusion

Despite all the odds, I still believe in the value of marriage, I believe that the traditional definition and values in marriage is far more advantageous. While technology is better moving forward, societal values, relationships and the upbringing of children should be going backwards.
