There are many interesting features about bladder cherries and groundcherries in terms of the cuisines and ornamental uses of the fruits. Despite having similar names, the unique hybrid fruits grow on entirely different plants.

Bladder cherry: This is also called “Physalis alkekengi”, This fruit is identified by the red or orange colored husk often shaped like a lantern and which covers a tiny fruit bearing some resemblance to a cherry. Due to the unique plant part, this plant is also commonly employed in floral designs. The fruit is edible and very sour, hence it can be incorporated in jellies, sauces or used as a topping. Bladder cherries prefer warm conditions but can do well in well-drained soils and to full sun.

Groundcherry: Also known as Physalis pruinosa, grows fruits which are very small and are buried within a thin paper husk and they taste sweet. Like other fruits, these berries could taste like tomatoes and many people eat them raw, cooked or even during preserves. The growing region of groundcherries can be exposed to various weather conditions although warm temperatures, good drainage, and an adequate amount of sunshine are favored. They do not need much attention to grow.

Cultivation tips: Although both plants do not need much supervision to grow and counter check for fevers and diligence this limits on slothfulness. Good watering and feeding about once a month worked well. High moisture levels may cause fungal problems and plants rank should be protected from cold temperatures extreme.
