In the family Charadriidae, puny little birds which are shorebirds called plovers are very interesting to ornithologist. With their colorful feathers and quirky behaviour, this species is also found in deserts, mudflats and grasslands all over the planet.

Plover’s captivating feature is the coloration of their feathers, which changes from one species to another, as well as with seasons. Many types of plover have buff and white markings that help them blend into their surroundings; this is an important feature of plovers especially for avoiding being eaten up. There is often the phenomenon known as sexual dimorphism amongst plovers in that males are often the more colorful during breeding season when enticing females for mating.

Courtship and chick rearing in plovers is also fascinating. They are highly territorial and perform complex courtship and mating behaviors which often include displays and calls. While nesting, the husband and wife each has their turns at brooding the eggs, or attending to the chicks showing the essence of family inclusion.

Plovers are important subjects in determining avian ecology and behavior. They are a reminder of the importance of maintaining wetlands. As long as environmentally polite measures are taken, it is highly unlikely that these endearing birds that dot the skies over the world would become extinct.
