Inter - Possible Champion
Inter have shown themselves to be unbeaten in seventeen Italian league games, having played half of the season holding a streak of eleven wins, interrupted by two draws. This high level of play has not allowed anyone among the competitors to challenge since the beginning of the year, and as far as we know, Milan and Juventus lose points quite often, so no one will prevent the team of Inter to become the champion of the League.
Has Juventus had a crisis?
Juventus faced Fiorentina on Sunday, and before that its sporting director Fabio Paratici said that no one at the club considered the possibility that the team would take a place outside the Champions League zone. By the time the last round of Serie A ended, the Bianconeri had first fallen out of it and then returned, and are holding on there thanks to extra points.
Juventus is in crisis. Paratici's defiant confidence did not match the team's performance on Sunday, when they drew 1-1 with Fiorentina, losing to a fourteenth-ranked opponent before he equalized with his only shot on goal.
Andrea Pirlo's team looked a mess again: there was no pressure in midfield, and nominal centre-forward Dibala squeezed the game even further with his constant retreat deep into the pitch. Ronaldo again looked pale on the left flank.
It was not a good week for Juventus, for whom the collapse of the Superliga project was accompanied by a drop in the standings. The champion beat an uncomfortable Parma in midweek, but the loss to Atalanta resulted in the Bergamo club not only overtaking him in points, but also gaining the lead in head-to-head encounters.
Milan have fallen rapidly from the top to fifth place
Next to the Turin side, Milan is out of the Champions League zone. It is still unclear which of them is more afraid of the prospect of losing. Juventus, as champion of the previous nine Serie A games, has higher expectations. Nevertheless, the Milanese led the league for the first 20 weeks of the current campaign.
Their trek to the top began last season. Milan has never lost in Serie A for almost a full calendar year: 304 days from March 2020 to January 2021. All the while, team leader Pioli has struggled to keep his young players from soaring in the clouds, he has continued to insist that their main goal is simply to return to the Champions League.
To many, his wariness seemed too much, but he simply understood the very fragile confidence of the young squad. Milan have gone twenty-seven games without defeat in Serie A, but since that streak ended, the Milanese have played seventeen more matches without winning more than two in a row. In the big games, they lost, conceding as many as three goals to Juventus, Atalanta, Inter and Lazio.
