With the scene I saw this morning, I thought I would write to you about the "Ehela tree".
The common name we speak of in Sri Lanka is "Ehela". But they are also called by other names. They are Konnei (Tamil), Shower of Gold (English), Kavani, Thirukkontai. The scientific name here is "Cassia fistula". This is a legume plant.
The height of the Ehela tree is between 10-20m. This deciduous, well-grown tree with smooth pale gray trunk has branches extending up to 15m. Bark is dark brown with growth.
Are oval leaves. Also smooth and shiny leaves. They grow to 7.5 - 15 cm in length. The leaves are compact, with 3-8 pairs of leaflets arranged in opposite lengths of 10 - 60 cm, including the terminal pair.
Each flower has five yellow petals of equal size and shape of 4.7 cm and blooms in clusters of up to 50 cm. Flowers light yellow when faded.
The fruit also produces a pod with many seeds. It is a blackish brown growing 60 - 100cm long.
A plant that is strong and long-lived. It is said that the wood parts of this plant have been obtained to create a pillar at the Adam's peak which is located in Sri Lanka. This plant is drought tolerant and does not flower all the time and blooms from April to July and then sheds its leaves. It seems that spring has come to the environment at the time of flowering.
That is why in many countries these trees have been planted and nurtured for shade and beauty along both sides of the road. Grows well in wetlands and abundant in forested areas.
Endemic to eastern India, Myanmar, Thailand, Pakistan, South Asia and Sri Lanka. The national tree of Thailand is the Ehela tree and the national flower of the Indian state of Kerala is known as the Ehela flower. In those countries, too, the plant is considered a medicinal and ornamental plant.
Its roots, bark and pods are used in medicine. This plant is of great value in Ayurveda and is used as a valuable medicinal plant for many ailments. Parts of this plant are used to reduce constipation, nervous system disorders, edema, burns, ulcers and wounds as a cleansing agent, in diabetes, liver disease, inflammation and heat.
Although it may seem like an ordinary tree to us, it is a very valuable medicinal and beautiful perennial plant. We lovingly care for our breath as well as these trees. Trees are our breath. ❤️🌳💐🌱🌸🌿💮🌲❤️
Enjoyed your amazing article about the Ahela tree and flowers. Now there are some bud varieties too. In our garden, we have a bud tree that is smaller in the size but starts grooming at a very early age.
