Hello everyone ,

I hope you all are doing great. This is the week 06 of the contest series hosted by Steem Sri Lanka. This is my entry for "Talk About Your Profession".

In my childhood, when my teacher asked "what is your ambition?", my answer was "to be a doctor". I don't know why.. but my answer was that. When I'm growing up with my age, I realized I'm clever to the mathematics than the other subjects in school. So, when I was 13 or 14 years old, I decided to be an Engineer without knowing anything about the profession. That to tought was the foundation of my profession.

With the dream of to be an engineer, I selected physical science to do my a/ls. In my a/l life, my Applied teacher was Sir Janaka Abeywardana. He was a amazing character. He always showed us so many paths which can be reach to a student who doing physical science. Among his words, the two words QUANTITY SURVEYOR (QS) were noted for me. Because it's pronunciation was very beautiful to me. (It is still same to me.. ha ha) That was the first time what I heard the my professions' name.

Then what happened? My result was not enough to select to the engineering faculty. What I do now? Suddenly an idea came to my mind. I paid my attention to know about the two words which had a beautiful pronunciation. Yeah friends, I found about the profession Quantity Surveyor. Then I realized that the QS is like a nurse in a hospital. I believe you got what I meant. That was the turn in point of my profession.

My uni life
I sent my application to follow the HNDQS (Higher National Diploma in Quantity Surveying) and happy to say I was selected for that. I was so happy. But there was a problem. At that time I had qualified to study for a degree in Physical Science at the University of Ruhuna,Sri Lanka. My mother wanted me to do it. But I had no desire for that. At the time, I was seriously thinking of becoming a quantity surveyor. Happily, my mother understood me. She let me do what I wanted. That was the first step of my Profession.

That is how I enter to my profession. Now I have one year experience in my profession. I'm so happy about my profession. I could not be able to be an engineer. But I have no worry about that. Because I'm also in the same field. That brings me a huge pleasure. As a newbie, I satisfy with my salary. But there has a some problem these days because construction field has slowed down with the pendemic. Clients could not be able to take loans for their construction works from the bank easily. But I'm sure, this situation will soon settle.

Bobcat and Me
I can remember when I was a trainee QS, My incharge always sent me to the site. So in those days, I did documentary works in the site office before lunch. After lunch I went to the site. In those days excavation works were what went on in our site. So excavators were there. Usually I like to the excavators most. My most favorite excavator was bobcat. I loved to get into it. After days of requesting, I was allowed to do so 🙊. Finally I got into the bobcat machine. In that day, our site engineer said "you are a rare girl..". Maybe it's because I like excavators😂😂😂

As a newbie, everyday is a challenge for me in my profession. But I like it too much. I do experiments making new formats for my works. Main challenge is less knowledge about items and tools in the construction. And also about the rates. But day by day I am becoming aware of those things.

Sometimes what I do is wrong...😔 It's really because of ignorance. At that time I get very upset. I remember one day my boss told me, "A specialist in any profession, once an apprentice in that job." Actually I don't know who said it.. But my boss told me that. 🤗

While doing works
My biggest goal right now is to handle a solo project (QS part). There fore I must to be a experienced QS in my field. But because of the covid-19 , we are staying at home. I'm worry about that. Why? Because my expectations go down day by day. It is common to everyone.

QS is a good profession like other professions. Eventhogh I have one year experience in here, I added lot of things to my life. In shortly, QS knows how to balance money and select quality goods 😬. It is very important for normal life. On the other hand my profession teaches me to handle various people and how to deal with people in the society. Sometimes I have to handle labours. Sometimes I have to handle clients. That is a great experience to me as a girl.

Sometimes I get the opportunity to enjoy the environment, to do my hobbies through my profession
So guys, I think I said a lot of things. This contest led me to write more. Thank you very much @randulakoralage for giving us a good contest🤗.

Your advice to someone who willing to join the same profession.1

You may think, I skipped this. So guys, I have to say something. In my opinion, every profession is a good and also respectable profession. No matter who you are a doctor or a engineer or a shop keeper or what ever to be. Every profession is a respectable profession. And also responsible.

My advice is whatever profession you choose.. love it first ...

Remember....! Some things change our lives in unexpected ways. Like the two words, Quantity Surveyor🤗

Thank you..!
