Ongoing Conflicts and Wars of the World

It's astonishing to even think that, in passing through 2024, most wars are still going on around the world. Where some of us go on with our lives without much problem, millions of people's lives are being affected by them. Wars are very complicated in nature: political fights, ethnic issues, power struggle-the list just goes on. I am going to talk about some of the major wars going on right now and how they are causing a great humanitarian crisis.

War between Ukraine and Russia

In 2022, the war between Ukraine and Russia began with the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. It forced several million people to flee from their homes. Certain cities like Mariupol and Kherson have turned into war zones. European countries and the whole world have been offering their assistance to Ukraine, while Russia faces economic sanctions.

This war has affected not only Ukraine but also the world because of the increase in energy prices and food shortages, given that it is said that Ukraine is a big exporter of grain. The situation is tough, and peace seems far away.

Yemen Civil War

The war in Yemen began in 2014 and is among the worst humanitarian crises in the world. The fighting in question involves Houthi rebels on one side and, on the other side, a Saudi-led group supporting the Yemeni government. Consequently, millions are suffering from hunger, diseases, and basic needs such as water and medical care.

Kids, in particular, suffer under this war. The international community tried to help, but up to this date, peace has not been achieved. Yemen is so in a terrible state, and no end is seen to it.

Syrian Civil War

The Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011, is a source of continuing pain and devastation. The protests, against then-government headed by President Bashar al-Assad, have transformed into an extremely brutal war. While much of the country has come under control today due to Assad's government, the fighting does go on even now in the north.

This war led to the exodus of millions from Syria, one of the most significant refugee crises in recent history. Entire cities have been destroyed, with many people losing their homes and families.

Sudan Conflict

In 2023, Sudan descended into chaos when two of the most powerful military groups in the country entered a full-on fight against each other. The Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces go head-to-head in this fight over who will be in control, killing several thousand in the process. Many people have been forced to leave their homes, most recently in the capital, Khartoum.

It is terrible in Sudan because of a lack of food, water, and medicine, while the people are suffering, and nothing can be done by any organization for their aid.

Tigray Conflict in Ethiopia

In November 2020, war broke out in the Ethiopian region of Tigray and has since then perpetrated atrocious humanitarian suffering upon its people. Although the active hostilities between forces somewhat subsided at the end of 2022, hunger still torments the residents of Tigray, along with displacement and violence. This conflict between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF has resulted in bodies and millions left homeless.

Humanitarian work has been grossly compromised, and to this day, there are still millions of people in dire need of assistance for survival.

Israel-Palestine War

The war in Israel and Palestine is one of the oldest. Tensions between Israel and Palestinian groups usually result in violence, which involves the likes of Hamas. They both go through rocket attacks and airstrikes, with many innocent civilians caught in the middle of fighting.

Many attempts for peace have been made, yet up to date, no solution has been found. It is one of the major problems that has plagued the Middle East, affecting the lives of millions.

Humanitarian Crisis

What makes these wars worse is the suffering of the innocent civilians. Several millions were displaced from their various houses, living in refugee camps or other countries. Many have lost family members, and basic needs like food, water, and medicine are usually not available.

The Red Cross and other agencies, like the United Nations, are doing their best to help; however, their situation seems completely overwhelming. The world needs to come forward not just to extend aid but, more importantly, to seek solutions that can bring lasting peace.

War is terrible and inflicts pain upon humanity that is not even imaginable. The wars still happening today stand in memory that we must work towards peace. Regarding feelings of helplessness, one can stay informed about the world and share that information while supporting humanitarian efforts. We can all play a small role in building a better world.
