Oftentimes, there are troubles connecting. It seems this problem is not so easy to solve, but often times a match starts and I wait for 4 minutes until my opponent surrenders. It's boring to wait, so it would be good if you only had ~60 seconds for the first move. Or, a bit more work to implement, you could just check if they are connected properly between each move. I think there's a disconnect feature but it's lacking/doesn't work on the first turn. Maybe because it reads a 'disconnected' event rather than actively checking if network packets are being sent? idk

If they truly disconnect it will say that and give 60 seconds for them to reconnect. In most cases it's just that they're afk.

There are a lot of times where I enter a game, then it instantly crashes and I think I remember noting my rating goes down afterwards at least once. So in such a case, clearly I played a game and lost it even though I never entered the game. As I've never seen someone lose by disconnecting during the first round, it's reasonable to conclude that the error is not always due to afk players. There are probably some situations involving afk since the queue is long. Even if they are AFK, though, if they aren't going to move they should still lose early IMO. Maybe the notification system when a game starts could be improved to help this, but I'm not convinced that's the real problem.
