Tournament: Evasion!

in hive-135459 •  4 years ago  (edited)

I had an idea that I liked, so it’s time for a tournament! This will be my third, I think that
the last ones went well, so there’s a reason to join.

Logistics:
The tournament will be live, Monday, August 10th at 8PM EST till whenever it ends (Likely around 3 hours.) Obviously, if you can’t make that time, you shouldn’t join. Though it’s tentative now, so if enough people complain then it will change. We will meet in the discord and play a single-elimination tournament with seeding determined by a ~4 person round robin.

Rules:
Each match will consist of 2 games: A game where you evade, and a game where you chase.
The player on the ‘evading’ team has the following restriction: You may not perform a move to kill or charm an enemy unit. This means no melee, ranged, fire magic, poison, etc. You can still use freeze, pretrify, wind, lust trigger, etc.

In contrast, the chaser has no restriction. The goal of the chaser is to make the enemy run out of morale in as few turns as possible. Taking the king is not sufficient. After both games are played, the winner of the match is the one that won in less moves. In a tie, the player with the lower CEO ranking wins. (In round robin, ties don’t need to be broken, so this only applies to the single elimination tourney).

Banned Units:
Evading side:
MAX ARMY COST: 90
Bomber // violates pacifist principle
Samurai // violates pacifist principle
Phoenix // violates pacifist principle
Wisp - Max 2
Dryad // too easy to store moral
Comet - Max 1
Enchantress - Max 1
Stonemage++, Stonemage+++ // strong and hard to obtain

Chasing side:
MAX ARMY COST: 80
Champions:
Antimage// destroys all strategy
Banshee // too easy to breach defense
Dragon // too easy to breach defense
Comet // too easy to breach defense
Vampire - Max 1. Base version only.
Greed++, Greed+++ // strong and hard to obtain

Minions:
I want the main threats to be champions, so the chasing side can use ONLY the following minions.
Beacon, Bomber, Duelist, Frog, Hoplite, Phantasm, Portal (Base and + only), Militia, Nexus, Pawn, Penguin, Salamander, Spider, Spearman, Snake, Soulflare, Skeleton, Slime, Shieldsman, Sylph, Tombstone, Undine

List subject to change. It will be finalized in a few days.

Hey -
For next time (if even), I thought having such a long time delay in the event wasn't attractive to me (I would have announced and did the tournament in 3 days). Of course I know this kind of criticism could be flipped the other way, that 3 days is too little and you want a longer timeframe, but I think 10 days is to the "wait, what if I'm not free in 10 days?" point. I was interested in playing but wasn't ready to sign up.

As for the rules, I thought it created a very linear meta with the 'evader' not having many in-game choices, mostly just using Petrify and Freeze because what else is there (Enchant is too specific and your opponent could take something else). Also banning Dragon was extremely questionable IMO, not because it was 'too easy to breach defense' but because there's like 20 other pieces that do the same thing (Queen++?! Rook for being able to target the champ line? Fortress+++, ArchBishop+++, etc.). But saying that is kind of anti-competitive for a player too, cause they want to use that for their own army rather than risk it getting banned. You run into people just using the second-best versions of the things you wanted to ban (because those did exist for many of the rules) IMO.

Most likely it'd have been a Wisp vs. Antimage game, with FrostMage/Gnome stuff covering the front row, until a Fortress+++ (which is STATUS IMMUNE) owner goes and wins the whole thing. Also, any chaser moves that don't take an opponent piece are so bad that only one piece would be used for most of the games. I felt the games would be pretty linear (Vampire base would actually be a distraction with the Gnome minion line).

Iirc, most tournaments have lot more than 10 days to the start time, I felt it was fairly short. The length is good for when people complain about balance before hand + advertising. But kong chat wasn't around and so I didn't advertise at all in the end. I likely won't host another tournament unless grand publishes the game to some other site (newgrounds, steam ...) because kongregate has been killed.

I'm cancelling this tournament since there was no interest after 5 days.

seems strange to 'upvote' this, but I did it anyway ^_^
consider it a '+1' for the act of announcement, rather than simply abandoning.

Arguably I should have put more effort into advertising, but I lose that argument

It's ok, it is quite hard to inspire people to cross over into steem world (or even discord), so it creates a much larger barrier to entry than past tournaments... but hopefully this can be resolved over time in various ways.

If you had 'advertised' the tournament in the same way as you had done in the past (yes we are everywhere), then it may have served the purpose of dredging up a few inactive people or pushing someone across the fence into magical steem land :)

Even still, the idea and notion alone is a good sign from you.
So thanks ^_^

Hmm, I organized this one a bit too fast, since no participants have shown up yet. So as a bonus, everyone who shows up to the tournament as a participant will get 10RP.

I want the main threats to be champions
Salamander and Undine are allowed

yeah those strong minoys are strong, though Salamander at base isn't that

They are about as threatening as milita in this format and take time to develop, I'm not particularly worried. Mostly I'm avoiding units like reaver and royalguard

I don't know, sounds like a tournament that's decided by who has a vampire+++ and portal+++ to use. Vampire should probably be banned as well if you're banning queen, considering in this format there's very little reason not to take portals and stuff.

Good points. ++,+++ pieces being too rare is a good point, for vampire and earth elemental especially. So I've added some bans.
I was banning queen due to the ++, +++ versions since the 2 square radius of death is pretty scary. But instead I changed it to limit max army cost so queen is just very expensive.

"the winner of the match is the one that won in less time"
the winner of the match is the one that won in less moves ^_^
