As I've mentioned previously... I've spent some of my last days in Netherlands purchasing a few last silver pieces from sellers that I trust on Ebay and Marktplaats. It takes years and several transactions before you start to form a good trust between seller and buyer... and all of that will have to be rebuilt with different partners in Australia. So, to finish off my time here in the Netherlands... I figured it would be nice to buy a few last things from people that I had already purchased from before.
Of course, it didn't stop me from also trying out a few new sellers either! From this particular seller in the Netherlands.. I picked up this two ounce Queen's Beasts collector coin. The Queen's Beasts series is something that I've been meaning to pick up... however, I never really got around to it. So, I figured that a collector coin (with all of the series on a single side) would be a decent enough replacement. Of course, it would be nicer to have one of each of the Beasts... but hey, if the options are between a collector coin or nothing... I will definitely take the collector coin!
So... when I received the coin, I was slightly disappointed. The designs are pretty squashed together and you don't really get much of a good area for each of the designs to stand out. The reason for this is the fact that they have taken the two ounces of silver and made the face area the same size as a single ounce coin. That means that there isn't much area for the designs on the faces... and it leaves you with a thick chunky coin instead.
Other two ounce coins that I've purchased have spread the silver out to the same thickness as a one ounce coin... which means that you have much more area for the design to really "shine" through.
Still... this is a nice coin to add to the stack which is now heading over to Australia on a boat in a shipping container. I'm really hoping that there won't be too much damage or loss to the coins... sea air and possible heat might make for some tarnishing.
On the other side of the coin, the Queen's profile doesn't suffer too much from the lack of space... after all, it is the same design as the one ounce faces.
So, in the end... silver is silver. However, from an aesthetic point of view... I am a touch disappointed with this particular coin. The design of the Beasts is too squished together to be pleasurable to look at... however, that said... it does make me REALLY want to collect the single editions of each of the Beasts! So, I will be on the lookout for a copy of each of those in the near future... if I can snatch them up at a good price in Australia, I will do it immediately!
Plus... I've discovered that I prefer my silver to be less chunky and more spread out... I like the designs to have the space to really present well.
