ABSTRACT:

People despite of being well acquainted with the life-threatening effects of stress, still can't really seem to handle/manage stress and its ongoing effects. Stress is a normal human reaction that everyone goes through, when humans encounter problems or something unpleasant, the body generates mental and physical response to the ongoing events. It is the feeling of finding oneself being overburdened and not being able to handle stress. There are several types of different stress that has negative affects on human body and brain. Stress can have very deadly effects on one's life which should be managed upon time through various things that help cope up with stress.

WHAT IS STRESS?

Stress is a body reaction to the threats/events that human experiences, the events/changes are known are "stressors". Stressors are external and internal as well. However, stress can be positive but here we're talking about the negative stress and its impact on human's lives. Stress is something that every human goes through in their lives, it causes emotional, physical and psychological tension, some people cope up with stress perfectly and some doesn't, it all depends upon some factors, such as: genetics, personality, attitude, past events and so on.

THREE MAIN TYPES OF STRESS:

  • ACUTE STRESS:
    This is the most frequent and common type of stress and is short termed. A person who has gone through some traumatic experiences/events in their lives or has witnessed life-threatening event develop acute stress, it is basically related to past events that a person encounters.

  • CHRONIC STRESS:
    Chronic stress is an extended and incessant feelings of stress that leaves a negative and harmful affects on your health including mind and body and if left untreated can damage a person permanently. When people are not able to handle their stress and resolve the situation, the stress becomes chronic.

  • EPISODIC ACUTE STRESS:
    In episodic acute stress, a person undergo acute stress time and again, a person who's experiencing episodic acute stress may have a constant feeling of being under pressure and have an insight that things are consistently going in wrong direction which is very mentally and physically exhausting.

EFFECTS OF STRESS:

Stress has undoubtedly negative affects on human's mind, health, body which leaves a person in a very exhausting state. Some of the effects are temporary while some effects remain permanent.

PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF STRESS:

  • Deficient energy.
  • Chest pain and tightness, heart palpitations.
  • Upset stomach/Indigestion/Nausea
  • High or low blood pressure.
  • Lose of appetite.
  • Immune system is enfeebled.
  • Jaw tightness/clenched jaw
  • Acute hair loss
  • Tension headaches
  • Panic attacks
  • Hyperventilation/shortness of breath
  • Fatigue/weariness
  • Excessive sweating
  • Skin problems
  • Fertility complications
  • Excessive weight loss or gain
  • Heart diseases

MENTAL/EMOTIONAL EFFECTS OF STRESS:

  • Depression/anxiety
  • Lack of motivation
  • Agitation
  • Vexation/Mood swings
  • Lack of concentration
  • Insomnia/sleeping problems
  • Frustration

EFFECTS ON BEHAVIOR:

  • Lessened work productivity.
  • Impulsivity
  • Isolation
  • Smoking excessively/Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Eating too much or too less
  • Procrastination
  • Opting obsessive/nervous habits
  • Aggressive behavior

COGNITIVE EFFECTS:

  • Problems related to memory
  • Lack of judgement
  • Uncontrollable or unnecessary thoughts
  • Persistent worrying

CAUSES OF STRESS:

The events that put people in a state of tension or cause stress are called "stressors". Everyone goes through different causes of stress daily or sometimes. What really causes stress is dependent upon the perception of a human being. Some things that seem stressful to one person might not be stressful enough to other person, it all depends upon perception of a person. Some of the common causes for stress includes the following:

  • Financial problems
  • Relationship problems
  • Expectations for higher grades
  • Death of a loved one
  • Loss of job
  • Unemployment
  • Encountering major changes in life
  • Not having control over the situation
  • Responsibilities
  • Deadlines

WAYS TO MANAGE STRESS:

It is hard for some people to manage stress properly, however, if a person tries and manage stress, gradually the underlining symptoms reduces. Since stress really disrupts a person's daily life, it should be managed on a daily basis by opting some healthy procedures that can really help a person manage their stress. Some of the ways include:

  • Get help from some professionals and tell them your problems related to stress, seek a doctor when faced with health problems due to stress. However, it is not a good sign to rely on medicines since it has its own side effects in a long run and disrupts a person's normal life but medicines can be taken according to doctor's prescription which can help lessen the stress. Therapies really helps with dealing stress, one should not hesitate to go to therapist when faced with problems due to stress.

  • It is said that exercising really helps with dealing with stress and stress can be reduced to a greater levels. Regular exercise even for 15-20 minutes can help with stress-related problems. Engaging your mind in random activities will help reduce stress, for instance: going for a walk, watching a movie/series, cooking/baking, meditation, listening to songs or doing anything a person loves.

  • Taking good care of the diet, eating fruits & vegetables, getting enough sleep and staying hydrated will help the body control stress in an efficient manner, stress weakens a person's immune system so eating healthy foods will help a lot and boost the immune system.

  • Acknowledging the good things in life and having a positive mindset and outlook can also help with dealing with stress.

  • When stressed out, talk to a family member or a good friend who you know you can talk to and open your heart to, staying connected and having someone to talk to will ease the stress and managing it will become easier.

  • Drop the unhealthy habits that is escalating the stress and making it worse even more, it's hard at first but withdrawing unhealthy behaviors will give you a better feeling about yourself.

  • Manage responsibilities efficiently by doing one thing at a time, rushing and procrastination will only trigger the stress. Try keeping a track of things and managing one at a time.

  • Be confident about yourself and have a positive mindset that you can and will overcome the problems. Having a positive mindset about yourself can really help with stress.

  • Make time for yourself, do things that you love doing, for instance: going for shopping, outing with friends, self-care etc.

CONCLUSION:

Stress can really take a toll on a person's mental/physical health if not taken care of it timey and managing stress efficiently, the stress can turn into chronic which has serious negative effects on a person's health and some remain permanent. Knowing all the harmful effects of stress, one should start managing it on a daily basis and help prevent major complications that can arise due to stress.
