My fellow steemians, I'd like to share with you some little details about my life so we get to know each other, or at least for you to know about me.

This time I wanted to tell you about the very first personal computer I've ever had.

Sometimes it's difficult to explain our emotions and feelings to anyone, but in this case I think I have an advantage because most of you already felt that rush when you were kids and your parents were about to give you something exceptional that you've ever wanted. That was the same emotion I had when my father brought home that big box (hey! when i say big is because it was BIG) with IBM printed on one side.

Back then it wasn't like today. Almost anyone couldn't afford and own their own PC. Besides, the APP concept as we know it today didn't even exist, perhaps the guy who made it up wasn't even born. C'mon! it was 1987, remember? There was no Internet, not even Cellphones! well, the tech existed but it wasn't widely used by the public.

I remember clearly the size of the box. It was HUGE because PCs were heavy and voluminous. I opened it and started to unbox the computer.

It was a metallic box, it has two floppies and one on/off button, and that was it. The monitor and keyboard came inside separate boxes.

It was an IBM PC 8086, and yes: it has no modem, no graphics card, not even a hard drive! Maybe you're laughing at home as you read this, but back then that was one top of the line computer.

The monitor was a green phosphorus monochrome one, and believe it or not the sole keyboard used to weigh more than a today's complete case with all its components.

When i turned on that beast, it started to sound as if something was broken but it was just the floppy drives looking for an operative system in order to start up. One had to insert a floppy with DOS so it could begin its normal operation. After the operative system was loaded, you should insert another disk with the program you needed to use, like WordStar, Lotus 123, Sidekick, etc.

And you also needed a third diskette so you could save all your precious work.

Besides the programs I had a few good games, but before you could play you should start a graphical simulator so you could run them on this pc. It had no soundcard either and all the sounds it emitted were through a buzzer.

Sounds complicated right? Well, as I said there were no precedent so it was the best of the best we had so far. And it worked efficiently, and it taught me the basic knowledge and experiences I needed later on my career.

I don't know what happened with that PC. I think my mother gave it to charity or just dumped it, i don't know. I wasn't living with my parents by then.

It was expensive 😱😱.

It was the 80s and back then this was the price for a PC, around $1500 and UpTo $6000
