Education is vital to every human on earth. It is, however, not restricted to the classrooms. It takes place everywhere; at home, parents and siblings are teachers. In religious edifices, the religious leaders are the teachers and many other instances. Teachers impact our lives in several ways. Some teachers work on our intellectual development, others too on our emotional development, spiritual development, and sundry. All teachers are not the same. As humans, we tend to develop a strong propensity for some instructors over others. In this article, I will be discussing an individual who exceptionally contributed to my academic life while I was a senior high school student.

The name of my favorite teacher in senior high school is Ausbyn Kojo Alimoh-Albertz Snr. I cannot ascertain his age, but he is likely in his mid or late forties. Alimoh, as he is frequently called, was my Chemistry tutor during my three years journey as a General Science student at Opoku Ware Senior High School. Mr. Alimoh-Albertz is an alumnus of St. Augustine’s College, which is one of the premier senior high schools in Ghana. He pursued his tertiary education at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he received a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Chemistry. He also has a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. In August 2012, he bagged his MSc. degree in Educational Administration at the University of Cape Coast. Alimoh hails from Elima, located in Ghana.

Chemistry was not particularly one of my strongest fields. However, I learned to like the subject profoundly due to the unparalleled tutelage from Mr. Albertz. He was able to break down the most complex topics in Chemistry into easily digestible ones. He is time conscious, affable, and intelligent. Unlike most teachers who made notes in books and wrote them on the whiteboards for students to copy, Mr. Alimoh regularly dictated his notes from memory. His notes were far better and more explanatory than the best Chemistry books in the nation.

One trait I liked about him was that class sessions were not always about Chemistry. There were times when he spent the whole period giving life advice to his students. He gave us knowledge on how life functioned in the real world and readily answered questions that we, students, asked. Mr. Albertz is a patient and eloquent man. He is full of integrity as well. These qualities made it very cumbersome for students to lie to him because he was great at detecting lies. He is fair and firm: Alimoh knows where and when to draw a clear line between playtime and work time. Outside classroom duties, He trained the top students for the National Maths and Science Quiz, which is one of the highly regarded quizzes in Ghana and West Africa. Students had high performance under his leadership.

Although I took a different direction in the university by pursuing Biology, Mr. Alimoh’s qualities had a significant impact on my life. I learned discipline and several other positive traits from him, and these have helped me in life. Hence, reflecting on these experiences lead me to bring Mr. Alimoh to your awareness as one of my favorite teachers.
