Hello Everyone
I'm @saany. I hope everyone is well and safe. Today I'm going to describe about our country's traditional archaeological installations. It's known as Paharpur Buddhist Vihara.
Its real name is Sompur Bihar. It carries international recognition of Naogaon district including Bangladesh. The place lies in Badalgachhi upazila, 34 km north of Naogaon Sadar. This monastery is 5 km west of Jamalganj station of Jaipurhat. It fell into a forested state.
Excavation began in 1923. It ended in 1934. It is known that during the reign of the Pal dynasty. Dharmapal, the second king established the Sompur Vihara at Paharpur in the 8th century with the aim of establishing a large Buddhist temple in his native Barind. It is known from an earthen seal found during excavation that it is Sompur Bihar. It is situated on 26 acres of land. It is the largest monastery in Asia. It is surrounded by 18 rooms lined with Buddhist monks.
The entire monastery is surrounded by a wall. There was an entrance on the north side. There was also a staircase to the main building. It was built like a castle. There are 38 stone statues on the wall adjacent to the foundation of the main temple. There are 2,000 terracotta plaques on the inner temple. During the excavation, about 600 terracotta plaques were found scattered.
This monastery gained the status of a higher educational institution or university for the study of science, jurisprudence and theology. Students from all over the world used to come here to gain knowledge. Acharya Atish Dipankar lived in Sompur Bihar for some time. His guru Ratmakar Shanti was the Mahasthavira of Sompur Bihar. Kahnpa, the lyricist of the ancient Charyapada, and his guru Jalandhari Pa alias Hari Pa also resided here.
A museum has been set up here with the recovered artefacts. There are bungalows for guests to stay.
