Hello everyone,I will like to share with u how my lecture when on today at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi (ATBU) in Bauchi state Nigeria at the faculty of Engineering and Engineering technology.

It was a material science lecture on mechanical and Engineering property of materials.
In Engineering when we talk about mechanical property of materials we are referring to the ability of a material to be able to withstand stress.
The mechanical properties of materials define the behaviour of materials under the action of external forces called loads.

There are a measure of strength and lasting characteristics of the material in service and are of good importance in the design of tools, machines, and structures.

The mechanical properties of metals are determined by the range of usefulness of the metal and establish the service that is expected.

Mechanical properties are also useful for help to specify and identify the metals. And the most common properties considered are strength, hardness, ductility, brittleness, toughness, stiffness and impact resistance.

List of Mechanical Properties of Materials
The following are the mechanical properties of materials.

Strength
Elasticity
Plasticity
Hardness
Toughness
Brittleness
Stiffness
Ductility
Malleability
Cohesion
Impact strength
Fatigue
Creep

Let take toughness of a material and talk about it.
What do we mean In Engineering when we say a material is tough, toughness here means the measure of ductility of a material.
Toughness is a fundamental material property measuring the ability of a material to absorb energy and withstand shock up to fracture; that is, the ability to absorb energy in the plastic range. In other words, toughness is the amount of energy per unit volume that a material can absorb before rupturing.

When considering toughness, one must make the distinction between impact toughness, which most often occurs under high strain-rate loading above the yield point, and fracture toughness, which generally occurs under lower strain-rate loading. All steels have different strength and ductility characteristics as a function of their composition (i.e. alloy design), and the key to good toughness is a balance between these properties and overall life-cycle cost.

The course lecturer was Engr Dr Bello Alli who is a professional mechanical engineer.
There were alot of calculations on how to determine the strength of a material and also to be able to choose wise the type of material to use in any Engineering work or project.
