Better life with Steem :Grow your own | Betel cultivation
Hello friends..
Today I am going to share with you some information about my experiences in betel cultivation.
Betel, an evergreen perennial vine, is cultivated throughout Sri Lanka. This betel leaf is a major commercial product and is used to supplement with arecanut, lime and dandelion. The betel-giving habit of Sri Lankans dates back to BC. Runs up to 340 km. In the rural areas, betel leaves are regularly distributed and betel leaves are found in almost every household. These betel vines meet their daily betel requirement. They cut betel leaves from betel leaves and supply them whenever they want.
Betel is believed to have originated in Malaysia or the East Asian region, and Chinese and Arab traders have introduced betel to Sri Lanka as well as South Asian countries. This betel leaf is rich in economic and medicinal value but has been used for festive occasions since ancient times. Other occasions when betel leaves are used include offering betel leaves and greeting with betel leaves.
Betel can be grown successfully in well drained and fertile soil and can be introduced as a sun-loving vine. When betel is grown on a large scale for export, harvesting begins when the length of the betel vine is about 1.2 - 1.8 m. Then the betel leaves are picked every three weeks. The 40 betel leaves are bundled up and packed in wicker cages. Initially the betel beds should be fertilized with organic manure or organic manure and after about a month they are mixed well with the soil.
Betel is also grown for local consumption and export and can be easily grown anywhere in Sri Lanka. Export quality betel leaves are dark green in size and large in size. Also, black betel, a commercial product, is restricted to several districts, Kurunegala, Kegalle and Colombo. Locally grown betel varieties include Maneru, Ratadalu and Galdalu which are popular betel varieties with high export quality. The main ingredient in these beets is volatile oil.
Thank you...!!
