Introduction

The urge to write on this topic came a long time ago, I have seen in many homes especially the African setting where mishandling, carelessness, and wrong attitude to law relationships have made many people miss the mark, caused crisis, rumpus in many families which in one aspect or the other led to the collapse of marriages. People need to be taught and guided on how to make peace with in-laws with the help of sacrifice, patience, mutual understanding, and the right attitude.
WHO ARE THE IN-LAWS?

The In-Laws are relatives by marriage, they are people who have close relationships and kinship to a man and women who have been joined together by marriage. They are always bound to couples by the law of marriage.

WHO THEY COVERS
  • Father-in-law-in-law who is the father of the spouse
  • Mother in law who is the mother of the spouse
  • Son-in-law who is the husband to one's daughter
  • Daughter-in-law who is the wife to one's son
  • Brother-in-law who is a brother to the spouse
  • Sister-in-law who is the sister to one's spouse
  • Other relatives include: Niece, cousin, nephew, and spouse to one's relative
  • In some settings, the in-law relationship always covers people from the same town, or compound that one spouse comes from.

DAUGHTER IN-LAWS VS IN-LAWS

In many cultures, duties, and responsibilities particularly in the African setting, such duties, and responsibilities are expected of the daughter-in-law, their parents, their siblings, and some other relatives. They expect wholehearted devotion, implicit obedience, and even servitude from the daughter-in-law's family and this has many times led to confusion and misunderstanding between both parties and also spread to affect the relationship between the husband and the wife themselves.

Sometimes she (woman) is considered the equivalent of a a domestic servant or slave.
.Dr. Myles Munroe

Based on my research the mother-in-law and sisters-in-law are mostly the problematic ones to get along with. There is always fighting, squabbles, strain, and stress among the in-laws, particularly the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law Relationship. It is always one of the toughest complications faced by the human race which needs to be looked into. There are different types of In-laws such as:

  • Nasty daughter-in-law: they mostly lack courtesy, say all sorts of things, and do all wrong things to dare their mother-in-law
  • Fighting and cursing mother-in-law: always fighting with everyone in the house such as couples, children, and domestic servants is one of their main goals.
  • Intrusive Father-in-:: mostly allows no privacy for the couple competing with the wife for the son's attention and always likes to be part of the decisions made by the couples
  • Supportive father or mother-in-law: They are always caring, loving, and praying for the children to grow and never for once meddle in family affairs.
RELATING WITH IN-LAWS

Many times there is a lack of understanding between the couples and their In-Laws and if there is mishandling, carelessness, and wrong attitude towards them and not trained to bourne out desire to meet the challenging task of relating well with them. They might end up losing their marriage. It always calls for sacrifice, patience,e, and mutual understanding from the couple and working towards molding blocks of understanding. To build harmonious relationships couples have to exercise the following such as:

  • Right Attitude: Having high regard for life, improving personality, behavior, temperament and right values will help you face negative challenges and situations rather than reacting to them.
  • Resolve conflict amicably: Don't react to past mistakes rather confront the causes of the conflict and deal with it to bring back peace among you and your in-laws
  • Communication: build your communication with them which will make both parties feel comfortable expressing their needs.
  • Love them: having a good rapport with one another and not harboring bitterness towards them
  • Defined boundaries: Boundaries should be properly defined, which allows everyone to know their right and boundaries.
  • Respect them: they should be abundantly rewarded with the respect you give them
    and many more.

When strangers are forced to clash, differences and conflicts can arise. Of course you are right: in such situations, objectivity, calm and mutual respect are extremely important.

However, you also write about abuse and violence, about the expectation of deference and humility - so I'm out in every aspect! There is no room for respect. One has to earn it, even as an older person...
