Today am going to be telling us a very interesting tale of my childhood which has left a lasting impression on me. During my period of growing up, one of the things I enjoyed so much was the periods when after dinner, I and my siblings gather around my mum to hear some ancient tales from her. She tells us so many tales about animals especially the tortoise and also about spirits and humans.

The tales I enjoy so much are mostly the horror tales about spirits. Even though they usually get me cringing with fear but somehow my little mind always wondered about the spirits and their existence and the powers they have. So this particular tale wasn’t really one of happy ending but I love it because of the moral that comes with it.

In a far away land inhabited by humans and spirits, there lived a young boy with his mother. The father was dead and he was the only child of the parents. In this land, there are some days that humans don’t come out because those days were the days that the spirits move around. And any human seen outside is in grave danger of death by the spirits.

So on a faithful day the mother of this boy was to travel to d neighboring village market called the OYE market to buy firewood and what they will use to make fire at home because they we’re running short of fire supplies. This trip will take about two days before she returns. So she gave the boy a piece of yam and a snail and the last means of making fire they had so that he will be able to have something to eat while she’s away.

This woman gave the boy a specific instruction, she told him to first roast the yam before roasting the snail and took to her journey and she also warned him to never go out side the house for any reason until she returns. When the boy got hungry, he set up the fire with the last match available and instead of roasting the yam first like the mother instructed, he started roasting the snail first. Ofcourse you know that snail produces liquid like substance from it. The liquid from the snail quenched the fire and the young boy was left without food to eat cos he hadn’t roasted the yam either and there was no way to get fire.

He became very hungry and decided to step out of the house to look for fire to continue his cooking despite his mothers instructions to never leave the house no matter what. He entered the village and everywhere was dead silent because it was the day of the spirits and no human was supposed to be outside. He kept walking and was meeting different spirits, they would enquirer why he was outside and he would explain that he was looking for fire to cook. He kept walking until he met a particular wicked spirit called NWISU. NWISU is a wicked spirit and the whole villagers dread it. This particular spirit was walking on the head and carrying fire on the legs.

The spirits shouted at him and asked him what he was doing out side and where his mother was. He replied that the mother went to the market to buy fire wood and that he was looking for fire to cook. NWISU didn’t listen to his explanation, he killed the boy for being outside. When the woman returned, she saw her child’s dead body in the village and she cried and cried.

The moral of this story is that we should always listen to our parents instructions. There’s a saying that says that what an adult sees sitting down, if a child climbs the iroko tree, he won’t see it. So the boy died because of stubbornness to the mother’s instructions. The part of this tale I love is the imagination of what a spirit walking with the head and carrying fire on the legs would look like and as a child it was quite a scare to imagine.

I hope you enjoyed my child hood tale. Thank you for coming with me on this journey. I want to invite @beewrites and @cindy20 to participate in this contest.

Saludos. SLPS

Yes you made a very good point there. Telling them the reason not to do what you are instructing is a good way to avoid ugly incidents like the one in the story above. Thank you for stopping by my blog and for the support too.
My warm regards.
