Today's lesson is an introduction to literature.
We give the definition, mention the genres of literature, and equally, look at the importance of literature.

Definition Of Literature

Literature is the art form that arises out of the human ability to create language.

Genres Of Literature

We have three (3) genres of literature

• Prose
• Drama
• Poetry

Importance Of Literature

(1) Literature Entertains: Through its manipulation of language and the reader's imagination, literature provides pleasure.

(2) Literature reflects society: This is possible as literature delves into social issues by commenting on the problems, weaknesses, strengths, hope, fears of people as presented through characters.

(3) Literature promotes the transmission of culture: This is realized through the reading of the literary texts based on the culture of different peoples as one gains knowledge of the traditions and customs of the people.

(4) Literature broadens the knowledge base of the reader: Since the content of literary texts borders on politics, philosophy, morality, business management, law science, etc, the reading of these texts will enrich the reader's knowledge of these fields.

(5) Literature is used to impart moral instructions: This is in terms of 'bestiary', this a type of literature in which bird, beast, etc are used to impart moral lessons.

(6) The studying of literature mostly involves the study of the use of language in its highest or purest forms, literature having language as its raw material which will further enrich the language power of any reader.

Having taken a look at the meaning of literature as we can see is the art form of human ability to create language. Listed out the genres of literature but don't be confused. The genres of literature are different from the types of literature which the oral literature and written literature in case you are being asked.
Literature is essential to use and we have seen how important is to as writers and readers because the majority of our works on steem come in the form of prose and they are to broaden our knowledge base, the drama aspect acted on stage keeps us entertained.
