preparing for an examination

This contest just came in right on time. In no time, our examination would commence. Some Freshers on campus are panicking on how they'll pass mth 111 as it's the first paper. I've no doubt advised many on how to read, study and practice.

I've kept lessons for some, teaching them how they would enter the examination hall and squash the mathematics exams carefully and confidently. My exams is also in days. How do I prepare? This might be helpful to you.

How I prepare for an examination?

Nearly everyone has different ways of preparing for an examination. They are some that prefer reading two days to the exams or a day to the exams to understand the course. They are some that prefer reading once given notes so that during time for examination it's revision they'll do. Yet, some still prefer preparing once the examination timetable is out.

Personally, I don't like reading after notes is given in class. In preparation for an exams, if I know I have 9 courses, I'll start reading after once a topic is completed so as not to compile notes and then stretch the elastic limit of my brain during exams period. Reading in time although I usually skip days has helped me had the best of results and not just reading, I do attend tutorials in preparation for an exams.

These tutorials usually help me recap things easily. That's how I prepare for an examination. Before the examination, I'll go through past questions after reading and covering the course outline. I also interact with others so that what I read will stick.

Tricks I've developed that works for me perfectly

I have lot of tricks when reading which have worked for me very well. If I'm reading a course that has to do with writeups and the exams is basically theory. I've heard lots of tricks from others of which I've tried and it works out.

  • Eating hot rice and then reading at the same time: I heard this from my classmate in secondary school and tried it out once. It didn't work the first day but actually worked subsequent days. I barely forget what I read while eating the rice. Even after eating, I'll be able to recall what I read.

  • Taking in chocolates: This has really proven effective if I want to remember what I read without reading it again someday. Although this doesn't work all the time, it has helped me in impromptu tests. I'll just buy a chocolate candy and fill myself. I stopped using this method after testing reading with noise.

  • Reading in noisy places: This has proven to be the most effective way I prepare for an examination. I would call this a trick to me because barely a person like reading in noisy places. You may find this absurd, but it works for me. If I'm reading in a quiet place, I won't be able to read for more than 5 hours and I won't grab certain things as my brain will dull in that quiet environment. I love reading where there's noise. It makes my brain active and I grab things easily compared to reading in quiet places. I tend to focus more in noisy places than in quiet places.

  • Writing a note while reading: This has also proven effective if I want to stay for more than 7 hours without sleeping.

  • Using the note as lyrics to songs and then singing it out loud: This has helped developed my cramming skills for courses that seems complex and broad.

My favourite study time for an examination and why?

My favourite study time for an examination is in the morning and at night and in places that are noisy. If I'm reading at night in my home, I'll create some noise by playing music in my home box before I read. I love reading these times because the sun's heat usually affect my reading in the day. If I'm reading, it's just for reading sake and not to understand.

Do i feel scared when going in for exams? How have I been able to fight this feeling?

Normally, I don't feel scared entering an exams hall to write an exams when I'm prepared. It's just like being trained for years as an electrician and then on defense day, you're scared electricity will shock you. Gone are those days I don't believe in myself even if I read, but now I've been able to fight that feeling by preparing for every exams and trying my best to cover the syllables.

I can remember when I was sick for almost a week. I couldn't prepare for my last exams because of how sick I was. I was scared because of that. I entered the exams hall with doubts that I would pass. I did what I could do and left the rest. Through preparation, I can conquer all my fears.

My advice to those who find it difficult to prepare for an example.

As I said, I've been advising those who find it hard to prepare for an exams to first of all think of the grade they want to have in that course and to think past how difficult the course is. Having understood this, they'll be moved to read. While reading, I've told some that if they know they are not this person who read for long hours, they should prepare ahead.

They should set aside two hours to reading a particular course everyday. This would help them understand and cover the syllables in time instead of accumulating the notes and then a day to exams, they spend 9 hours reading in vain.

  • Interacting with your mates on a particular course topic will help you understand better and remember easily.

  • Setting a timetable would also help. How many courses do I want to read today and how many hours do I spend?

  • Attending essential tutorials will also help those who find it hard to understand to get a better sense of the whole concept. Tutorials helped me performed excellently well in my mathematics exams.

In conclusion, examination is nobody's mate and it's a test of our understanding of a particular concept. If you want to prepare for an examination, you need to prepare in time to avoid getting shocked.
