This topic no doubt has a propounding effect on our lives as Culture tends to be diverse thereby, bringing similarities and different among the various Culture. The culture of the Igbos is definitely not the same as that of the Yorubas although there might be similarities but the difference is clear. Talking about cultural similarities and differences;

What are culture similarities and differences

Cultural similarities refers to the way in which group people, culture or tribe share certain characteristics or goals which may include shared beliefs, similar ways of communicating and greetings, expressing emotions as well as shared values and practices among members of that group.

Cultural differences as the name implies refers to those characteristics such as beliefs, customs and traditions including values which differs from one culture to another. For example,the way the Yoruba dress is different from the cultural attire of an Ibibio person.

Take a look at this pictorial illustration. This is beautiful me in my culture's attire and this is a Igbo girl. Our cultural attire which has special meaning to us shows how culture is different. Different cultures may have different attitude towards their personal space and social etiquette.

Concerning values and social life, a particular culture may place more importance on an individual's achievement while another may place importance on the needs of the community or society over those of the individual person.

Explain the theory of cultural similarities

The theory of cultural similarities emphasizes that different cultures share certain characteristics, values, beliefs and norms despite their differences in other areas like dressing and grooming. According to this theory, there are some aspects of human culture which are universal and are common to all societies irrespective of their cultural differences. These aspects include the Importance of family, social interaction, security and stability.

The theory of cultural similarities is very much not without its critics as most people argue that while cultural differences are important, they are still many underlying similarities that connects humans as a whole. Some also argue that this theory simplifies the complex nature of human culture and also argue that the idea of universal cultural characteristics is influenced by dominant Western cultural perspective.

Does my culture makes me similar and different?

Yes, my culture does make me look special, unique and entirely different. We had career day in my school some months ago and we were grouped into different cultures ranging from Ibibio to Yoruba. I was in Ibibio culture and I dressed so differently as the queen of the culture. The Bukid, ndot Iba and the attire of my king said a lot about the Ibibio culture.

I looked stunning that day and my dance was just on point. I danced based on the beatings by the drums men and did the marriage rites of my culture with the king of the Culture. Our house was exclusive compared to other houses and that made my house the winner.
