Thank you very much @steemkidss community for this wonderful, lovely and thoughtful contest presented for all the participants to share their growing up experiences, feelings and memories.
It's a known fact that nobody just grew up, every body went through childhood to adulthood. So my growing up and the house chores associated with it was challenging to me, the fact being that I grew up in my grandmother's house.
When I was ten years old my parents brought me to live with my maternal grandmother in the village as they lived in the town with my younger siblings. It was like I'm the one to do vitually every house chores. It was hectic and energy sapping but as time went on I became used to those chores.
There were many chores I must do before going to school or I do them immediately I returned from school and have taken my lunch.
TELL US ABOUT THAT OR THOSE CHILDHOOD CHORES:
Chores like ;
Weeding in the farm with my grandmother
Breaking fire wood either in the compound or from the bush with friends.
Going to the stream to fetch water with friends
Making some moulds in the farm/ making ridges
Washing plates and cooking ports
Sweeping the house and a large compound daily.
Cooking the family daily meal with my grandmother. And so many more.
WHY ARE THEY YOUR WORST CHORES ?
In all the above mentioned chores my night mares or the worst three were:
Going to the stream to fetch water for family use with a heavy bucket on my head, because the stream is very far from home.
Breaking of fire wood for family cooking.
Going to the farm to either mould heaps / ridges for seed planting for my grandma who was a heavy manual farmer with hoe and Cutlass.
Or going to the farm to harvest some crops mostly cassava that will be refined into Gary for family use, also weeding grasses with my grandmother and so many others like it.
WHO NORMALLY SEND YOU TO DO THEM:
My grandmother usually send me to do them.
These happen after school or on Saturdays, or still during holidays either short or a long vacation,
I and my grandma will go to the farm a very long distance place from home to work from morning till evening before coming back home also with loads of either fire wood or just any important load back home.
In Africa, it's a believe that girl children supposed to do almost all the house chores,
It's also believed that she is being trained well so as to be a good wife and mother when she marries.
Or a good mother in the future so she can also raise her children well and transfer the good behavior and character to her children when or as she gets married.
Parents will almost over look their boy children who will either be playing ball or playing with their mates but parents will so much concentrate on raising the girl children strictly well, with character and poise.
Parents will also tell their daughter's, "you need to be strong at any type of house chores, you are a woman" if you refuse to comply with this kind of training, you will be beaten or spoken to any how by many elderly folks.
So to avoid such embarrassment, the girls are bound to comply.
These three chores were my worst chores because : iam bound to go a long distance journey to fulfill them.
I lived with my grandma and she normally send me to do them.
ARE THEY STILL YOUR WORST NOW ?
No not at all, you know that was a good training then. I have mastered doing them then, and that training has helped me to do them now and even faster and better.
WILL YOU ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO HAVE THOSE CHORES ?
Yes I will encourage my kids to learn and do those chores now but in Africa, things have changed. Technology has taken the space of lots of manual chores of those years. Most chores are done easier, faster and with sophistication.
Some People no longer go to the stream to fetch water, we now have pipe borne water that runs daily, most people now use gas cooker and cylinders to cook their meals.
No more going to fetch fire wood from farm or bushes. Technology has changed a lot of things, life is easier, enjoying and faster now than then. We also know there is artificial intelligence doing some chores in some homes around the world.
