Ever wondered what the word anagram means?
First time I saw this word, I thought of something else. But apart from the word itself being brain storming, it helps us to think out of the box. I love anagrams and I choose to give anagrams to my kids to solve in school. Today we will be learning all about anagrams.
What Are Anagrams? |
---|
An anagram is a word or phrase that is formed by rearranging the letters of another word. And it must be the exact number of letters as seen in the first word. The word ana means back anew and gramme means letters, from Greek etymology. This explains its definition better.
Anagrams are easy to solve when one is conversant with a lot of words. The more words you know, the more easier it is to form new words from another.
Note that the original word given is known as the subject, while the new word formed is called anagram.
How to solve Anagrams? |
---|
To solve anagrams, follow the steps below:
To rearrange a word, you will need to change the positions of the letters. Anagram solving is more of trial and error, so a person must know a lot of words to be able to solve new ones
Find pairs of consonant words: to solve anagrams, it is pertinent to combine some consonant letters especially if there are lesser vowel letters in the subject. For example consonant combinations like Ch, Th, St always occur in words.
Isolate common suffixes and prefixes: Suffixes are common letters that ends a word while prefixes are common letters that begins a word. So when solving anagrams, always look for common prefixes and suffixes like ING, ED, SION, NT, and others.
Have a good vocabulary: To solve anagrams, one must be conversant with a lot of words or it will be difficult to form new words.
